Those are such impressive stats for a Bond film worldwide....COME OOON Craig.....cannot wait to see ti again.

Definitely my second favourite film of the year behind The Dark Knight RISES. I keep thinking about SKyfall...over a week ago now :D

And i too agree mendes should return....best film direction since his own American Beauty so powerful and it really rooted that human nature of Bond within the film...the subtexts....beautiful.

As someone who is very much a fan of old school James Bond, I must admit I did really enjoy this for the most part.

I especially loved the pre-credit scenes, which set the scene superbly. Great supporting cast as well. I thought Javier Bardem was especially terrific and made for one of the most compelling Bond villains ever.

Also big props for the direction of Sam Mendes, who manages to bring a unique sense of style to an established brand, which in no mean feat.

On the negative, I didn't really care much for the final segment of the film. I'm not keen on the idea of an origin story at all in terms of James Bond, but do feel if your going to do it, then do it properly, not in the rather half-arsed manner here. And the protracted nature of the films climax was ultimately a bit deflating.

For all that I complemented Mendes's for making something unique, I also do feel at times he went a little too far outside the box so that at times it didn't really feel like a Bond film at all, but fortunately he always reined himself in before it went to far off the rails.

Things seems to be promisingly set up for the next chapter of the Bond franchise, looking forward to the next part with greater enthusiasm after seeing this. 8/10

finally saw it - Certainly Craig's best 007 after the bore-fests that were CR and QOS.(that's my opinion)
Continuity with previous movies was all over the place. But I did like the twist at the end,the reception area and M's office were exact replicas of the original headquarters .As much as I try,I just cannot truly accept Craig as 007 - he is blond and those jug ears !!!.
I guess i am one of the mid period traditionalists who is hoping for a madman with a giant laser next time

Me too! But then... I have just got up to the end of Diamonds are Forever which closed the Blofeld storyline (more or less)

I'd love to see him reimagined for Craig's films. A comeback for.SPECTRE. We had it somewhat with the Quantum organisation but it wasn't really on that same level

For me this part with Craig was the worst. Casino Royale was the best. Here they didn't know if the want to go further with the Craig style or to go back to first Bonds.

I dont think they will go back to the "first Bonds" style. Keep Craig as he is, but have him react to the traditional elements in his own way (imo).

^^ While I think 'Quantum of Solace' is worse than 'Skyfall', I do get what you're saying and I agree, in 'Skyfall' it felt like they were trying to please both types of fans and/or couldn't decide what route to take the film down (old Bond or new Bond). Some things felt completely shoe-horned in (the gadget laden DB5 for example/. I have no problem with the car, the gadgets or Craig's Bond using them but it came out of nowhere and messed with the new timeline continuity. It was like they shoved it in to please fans of the old Bond).

^^ That's the way I'm hoping they take future films and judging by the final scenes of 'Skyfall' that looks like how they are going to play it.

    Agree

It's the 50th anniversary though so they had to put a nod to the past in like that really.

They didn't have to include any references to the past films even though it was the 50th anniversary! There was enough going on in the world of Bond to justify the anniversary and the fact that we were getting a Bond film in the same year as the anniversary should have been enough. ‘Skyfall’ could have been equally as great without all the references. In fact I’d rather have a good story and character development as well as action etc than have all the references in there. That said, I did enjoy ‘Skyfall’.

As for the DB5 issue, I mainly hated it because it felt shoehorned in for fans of old Bond and thus messed with continuity of the series’ reboot with Craig. While continuity has never been the series’ strong suit it felt completely out of place and messed with these Craig films being different from the first ones. They need to decide which direction they want to take the films in: the way of the old films, the way of the new ones or a combination. They can’t keep chopping and changing elements/timelines. If they want to incorporate elements of both then they need to make them work in terms of story continuity and better build up – the DB5 in ‘Skyfall’ being an example.

I have no problem with Craig’s Bond having gadgets or using them, it was just the way it was done. If they wanted the car (and gadgets) in the film there are plenty of ways they could have done it – even a simple line of dialogue would have been sufficient to explain the gadgets. You could have had Bond meeting Q at the Gallery. He hands Bond the gun and radio thing and then Q gives Bond a set of keys and says something like “The keys to your Aston. We’ve made a few changes since you last used her”. Craig’s Bond could then have sighed (I can totally imagine Craig doing this :D) thinking to himself “what have you done to my classic car?!”. The gadgets could then have been revealed later as they were. This line by Q could also have implied that Bond has been on several other missions and a lot of time has passed since ‘Casino’ and ‘Quantum’.

All I’m saying is, it could just have been more subtle (like the introduction of the old office at the end or the references to ‘Licence To Kill’, ‘You Only Live Twice’, ‘GoldenEye’, ‘The World Is Not Enough’ in the plot for example) or there could have been better build up to it like with the dialogue I’ve suggested. Sorry if it sounds like i'm having a go at people or complaining about the film, this is just my opinion and i wanted to justify it. I understand many others (including yourself) liked it and I’m not in any way saying that’s wrong. I just think it could have been done better.

    Regarding Craig's Bond films:

    Casino Royale - 9/10
    Quantum of Solace - 7/10
    Skyfall - 7/10

Skyfall was well-made, well-performed but it didn't click with me as an overall package. Neither of his last two Bonds come close to matching the brilliant storytelling of Casino Royale. As time goes by I'm starting to realise more and more how spot on that film was - a bit unfortunate in a way, since I don't know if they'll ever be able to match it again.

Easy. Yet to open in China (mid-Jan), where last year M:I Ghost Protocol (a comparative release, shall we say) did $100m alone. I imagine there's a very slim chance it may scrape over the line before then as long as its still playing and other films are underperforming*

    * i.e. The Hobbit, reportedly. A billion now not likely, they say (boxofficemojo).

Bond > Hobbit. Who'd have thought that six months ago? Amazing stuff.

They got greedy with The Hobbit, stretching it out to three films, so it serves them right.

I enjoyed The Hobbit, it had some great bits but at the end of the film, we're about 1/2 way through the book  And there are still 2 more films to go, I also felt the tone was a mix of The Hobbit (from what I remember of it) and LOTR, when Gollum appears it really felt more like LOTR

For those yet to see it and know where to look a DVD Screener copy has turned up today. Other than the brief, occasional "for your consideration" it's a mint looking copy.

So you would advise someone who has not yet seen it to go for an illegal online copy, rather than a big, IMAX presentationin a proper cinema, or wait a month or so for an official, pin-sharp, professional, DTS sound assisted blu ray copy, perhaps?

And you think this is going to somehow aid the viewing experience?

I'm not advising anything, but some people will probably want to. I'm not interested personally because I'm holding out for the Blu-ray release since it's only about 6 weeks away.

Are you kidding? Your post was practically an advert. Now they know it's available those people who would download these things will go looking for it.

And yet you now hold your hands up and say 'Not me, guv!'.

    Well done...
