So is anyone accused automatically guilty in your mind ? even after the original accuser states publicly he made a mistake on identity ?

Sometimes an accuser can be paid off or made to change their accusations.
Not saying it happened with Mr Messham.

Re Steven Messham- I have some questions

The police/ CPS surely seem to be missing the point. If the person in the photo was NOT Lord M then who was it? What has been done to investigate, identify and prosecute the person who DID abuse him?

The whole Bercow ruling just seems to be a distraction/ getting in the way of actually persuing the story that newsnight originally ran with.

You're assuming there really was a photograph. ;)

No records of such a thing. Everybody except Newsnight knew all about Messham and his wild claims.. .

Was the abuser not Jimmie McAlpine - http://google-law.blogspot.co.uk/2012/11/mcalpine-and-north-wales-child-abuse.html and http://theneedleblog.wordpress.com/2013/05/24/ahhh-it-was-jimmy-mcalpine/ - who died in 1991 a cousin of Lord Alistair McAlpine.

Thanks- an interesting read. I still don't really understand why so many people focus on the libel trial with Bercow and the 'mis-identification' from Messham as opposed to asking the questions that really need answers.

If it wasn't him in the photo, who was it?
Messham claimed the police gave him the wrong name- has this been investigated? Who gave him the name? are their records of the police procedure at the time? Why hasn't the identity of the actual person in the photo been investigated and reported in the main stream media seeing as the Bercow trial was such big news?

It's all gone rather quiet on that front and the law suit just seems like a complete distraction from the more important issues here. Just my opinion of course.

Really, are you sure about that, do you have a link where he said it?

    .

    Sorry, I meant before 9 Nov 2012.

So we are clear this is from that article and is part of Steve Messham's statement...
...this [is] not the person I identified by photograph presented to me by the police in the early 1990s, who told me the man in the photograph was Lord McAlpine."

Steve didn't know the name of his abuser until the police showed him a photograph and wrongly identified the person.

Steve Messham told Pariac O'Brien on Nov 6 on C4 News there were photos he stole in 1979 of abusers....
Q: And you saw other mens faces?

    SM: Mmmm (nod)

    Q: Clearly?

SM: Very Clearly, as clear as you can see mine.

    Q: Who’s face?

SM: The prominent Tory member for one

Q: His face, you could clearly see his face in one of those photographs?

    SM: Yes

Q: How did you know who he was?

SM: By the threats I got. When he threatened me he said, he told me who he was for a start and number two he’d have me killed if I spoke out. But that was their standard way of doing stuff, most abusers are like that.

No mention of the police telling him who it was 10-12 years later.

From the Waterhouse Report in 2000, this appears to be the only allegation made connected to the family...
52.16 ......The alleged abuser referred to by B, whom we will call X, has the surname of a well known and large non-Welsh family and he is said to be dead now..... According to B's statement to the police, X had several different motor cars and would wait for him at the bottom of Bryn Estyn Lane.... B alleged that he was buggered by X on four or five of these occasions....he knew the christian name of X but that he was unwilling to disclose it.

B was unable to say who had told him X's name.

Both Detective Superintendent Ackerley and Dean Nelson, a journalist to whom X had been mentioned, were asked about any further enquiries that they made to establish his identity.

Ackerley said that it was difficult to identify which member of the family was being referred to: he never had anything tangible to get hold of.

Nelson was more outspoken. He said that the name was mentioned to him but he never received any proper allegation about X. He added: "So far as I was concerned the X thing was a distraction."

Again no mention of police identifying anyone from a photograph.

Steve has a habit of retrospectively pointing the finger at others.

The major question has got to be whether any of them actually got teaching jobs. If they did then there's going to be a major scandal, if not then I think it'll blow over.

No wonder reporters make plenty of money. They write sensationalist articles about perfectly ordinary matters and people become 'outraged' taking the headlines at face value and not actually reading the 'not quite so sensational' details.

The panel will have made an adverse decision in very many cases. These ones they have considered carefully and with possession of the actual facts which we don't have and nor do the reporters and the self appointed moral hitlers like the odious Williams-Thomas.
One of these cases for example, was a gent who had befriended a pupil and who, it was very clear, had no improper or untoward interest in her at all. He had simply been unwise in behaving in a way that could be wrongly perceived.

But is this reason to be struck off ?

Others who escaped being struck off included a headmaster who asked a girl who thought she might be pregnant “inappropriate” personal questions

Is it innappropriate for a teacher to ask questions in order to find things out in such a situation ? What were the questions and were they really inappropriate or just felt so by the pupil and parents ?

a teacher who had pictures of female pupils from social networking sites on his school laptop

Were they there alone for a sexual nature or was it that he was silly and befriended his pupils and had pics of his friends on his laptop.

Jimmie McAlpine lived at Gerwyn Hall near Wrexham, owned a fleet of veteran cars including Rolls Royce and 1934 Hispano Suiza. He also had boys from local Homes to play cricket at his home and to do "gardening" there. It is very easy to see that someone (even local police) could confuse Jimmie McAlpine and Lord McAlpine considering the former's considerable wealth and local status. It is quite conceivable that Messham was told the original photograph was of McAlpine and his memory added the "Lord" to that over the years.

And the one who drove the young pupil down a country lane and kissed him or her? And the one who had downloaded child pornography?
Obviously there will be many cases where the offence (or complaint) was trivial and they did their job correctly but we are not discussing those cases are we? And there is no reason for them to be mentioned in the press.

I think there are strict guidelines now for discussing matters such as pregnancy with pupils, and if he failed to follow the rules we should question why.

The facebook guidelines for teachers are very well known and anyone who disregards them either has a sinister purpose or is such a ridiculous fool that they should not be teaching anyway.
Every teacher is well informed about child protection.
