Uploading DVDs to micro SD card

To upload films from DVDs onto a micro SD card for use on a tablet, do they need formatting to a different type of file first? Or can you just upload it to a PC then drag and drop onto SD card? I've done this before with music but can't remember whether I had to format the music files. I can't just try it myself as I'm asking for my granddaughters for the tablets I bought them for Christmas.

However doing so is of disputed legality, so you won't be able to do so without additional software.
(alternately, the triple play blu rays/DVDs include a ready to play digital copy in their price)
Convert: Handbrake (free)
"Format shifting" is currently illegal (not just for DVDs, but also CDs... anytime you rip a CD and convert it to MP3/AAC/WMA you're infringing copyright), however the Government has said that it is finally going to legalise format shifting.
What tablet do you have?
I'm talking about DVDs they own to rip them for their own use. I thought that was allowed. They only have the cheap CNM ones from Argos.

for personal use it is unlikely to result in anyone knocking on your door; but i think it is against the letter of the law, if not the spirit.
Nope, it's illegal. As is ripping a CD, even though "everyone" does it and no one ever gets done for it. The UK currently has no "fair use" rights, unlike the US.
Ha, well that's rather pathetic. OK, finally legalising CD ripping is a great step, but you'd think they'd get with the times and do the same for DVDs etc. too, so long as it's for personal use only etc. etc.
Still, as you said, no one's ever going to actually get a "knock on the door" though, if it's just their own property being ripped for their own use.
Easy.
