I'm singing a mash up of these two songs at a kareoke event on Friday, and I wondered which song people prefer. I prefer Rocket Man, mainly because I prefer Elton to Bowie

I prefer Bowie to Elton, but I actually prefer Rocket Man to Space Oddity but only just.
I like the witticisms of both songs.
Are both songs concerned with the isolation and the boredom of space travel?

    Rocket Man.
Ashamed to say I only took notice of it when it was used in Family Guy.
The brass arrangement appealed to me.
Brass arrangements of popular songs are always fun

Both are fine songs - I'd personally give the edge to Space Oddity but it's so close I'm probably only saying that because I much prefer Bowie as an artist......and also one you've seen William Shatner take on Rocket Man it somehow losses something :)

I 've got some moves to Rocket Man. Would you like to see them?

both are great artists with great back catalogues, albeit both have been patchy the past few decades to say the least, but those are two great songs. it's hard to pick between the two of them. i typically prefer bowie over elton though. as you are doing a mashup of both then you have the best of both worlds (see what i did there?)

They both have their merits, but Rocket Man, only just though. I love Kate Bush's cover of it.

There are many songs that I don't like, but this is the only one that I HAVE to turn off because it gets more and more shrill...It does my head in and I can't listen to it. Awful, awful song! :o^_^

Of those 2 I like the Bowie one best

My favourite late 60s, early 70s space pop is the Stones '2000 Light Years from Home'..........and the Carpenters 'Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft'

I thought both songs were about drugs, lol! I love both songs but Space Oddity is just magical, atmospherical. It has an ethereal quality and it's a song that never dates for me. Rocket Man is great though. For me, Elton John is a legendary singer/songwriter and performer. David Bowie is a GOD, pure and simple! :-)

Actually 'Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft' is a song by the Canadian prog rock band Klaatu, who are worth a listen at some time if you are into prog.

And my favourite space travel song is 'Telstar' by The Tornados.

Ground Control to Major Tom -
She packed my bags last night, preflight.
Take your protein pills and put your helmet on -
And I'm gonna be high as a kite by then.

    (Seven, six)
I miss the earth so much
    (Five, four)
    I miss my wife
    (Three, two)
    Check ignition
    (One)
And may God’s love be with you
    (Blastoff!)

And I think it's gonna be a long, long, time -
    You've really made the grade!
I'm not the man they think I am at home -
Now it's time to leave the capsule if you dare -
    Ah, no no no!

This is major Tom to ground control -
I’m a rocket man, burnin' out his fuse up here alone.
And the stars look very different today.

Here am I sitting in a tin can -
Mars ain't the kind of place to raise your kids.
Planet Earth is blue and there's nothing I can do -
And there's no one there to raise them if you did.

Though I'm past one hundred thousand miles -
All this science I don't understand.
I think my spaceship knows which way to go -
It’s just my job five days a week.
Tell my wife I love her very much, she knows -
I’m a rocket man burnin' out his fuse up here alone.
    A rocket Man… (Here I am sitting in a tin can…)

    Never heard that Carpenters song

And that is a very good mash up

    And my top 5 Elton songs are as follows if anyone's interested;

    1. Rocket Man
    2. Crockodile Rock
    3. I'm Still Standing
    4. I guess that's why they call it the blues
    5. Are you ready for love?

What about the two *true* classics of space travel songs...

"Spaceman" by Babylon Zoo and "I lost my heart to a Starship Trooper" by Andrew Lloyd Webber's ex-wife. :D

Yeah, I always thought that "I'm Still Standing" never got enough credit for being a damn great pop-rock song. Not a massive Elton John fan, but I liked that one when it came out and I still do.

Same here..........never really been a big EJ fan

I liked Daniel and Your Song and Candle In The Wind.........and he had a little purple patch in the mid 70s with Crocodile Rock, Saturday Night and Benny and the Jets

I only know one of his songs from the last 30 odd years.........'I Want Love' from around the turn of the century

I did, however, think he was magnificent at Diana's funeral

That was performing under pressure !

I got to the 2nd verse of the lyrics that conehead typed and realised that I was singing the wrong song to those lyrics

Both good songs, but if I had to choose then I would pick Space Oddity.

My favourite cover artists(at the moment) have done a good job on both these songs though:

    Rocket Man

    Space Oddity

Just two guys singing in a Pizza Parlour :kitty:

    Some alternatives from Germany:

Peter Schilling - Major Tom, which is a tribute to Space Oddity.

    or

Dune - Million Miles From Home
