Gaga came 2nd on the Forbes most powerful celebrity list. haha And some people underestimate her power. Not a single or album released. $80 million in the past 12 months. Queen
After two years as a runner-up, Oprah Winfrey was named the most powerful celebrity on Wednesday by Forbes, heading the six women and four men who make up the top 10.
It was the fifth time the former talk show host who runs her own TV network has headed the annual ranking of 100 celebrities.
Singer Lady Gaga came in second, followed by director/producer Steven Spielberg and singers Beyonce and Madonna.
"There is nobody else with that kind of consistency and power," said Dorothy Pomerantz of Forbes.com. "There are only three people who have been on every single one of our lists since 1999. It is Oprah, Howard Stern and Steven Spielberg."
Singer and actress Jennifer Lopez, who was No. 1 last year, dropped to 12th place.
With earnings of $77 million from June 2012 to 2013, Winfrey was not the highest earning celebrity, an honor that went to Madonna who made $125 million, but Forbes said Winfrey's position in Hollywood and her presence in the press, on television and in social media propelled her to the No. 1 spot.
"She still wields an enormous amount of power, which is really what we look for in our fame matrix. She is taking this cable network and turning it around just through the sheer force of her will, her connections and her ability."
Despite hip surgery, which forced her to cut short a tour, Lady Gaga earned $80 million in the past 12 months which, along with her army of fans and powerful social media presence, assured her second place.
"She is still a huge force in pop music. Even when she is not playing, people are talking abut her and speculating about her," Pomerantz said.
Spielberg, with earnings of $100 million in the last year, was the top man on the list, ahead of rock star Bon Jovi at No. 7, tennis champion Roger Federer and Justin Bieber, the youngest member of the list, squeezed into the top ten at No.9.
Although only 23, sixth place singer Taylor Swift, made the list for the first time and rounded out the top 10 along with Emmy-award winning TV talk show host Ellen DeGeneres.
Money, fame, social media
Forbes based a celebrity's earnings on income from tours, books, contracts, endorsements, movies and residuals. Each celebrity was given a marketability score, developed by California market research firm E-Poll.
It gauged fame and influence by how often celebrities appear in the media. It used Starcount, a Singapore-based company that looks at 11 social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, to determine their presence in social media.
"In today's world celebrities have this enormous ability to reach out to their fans, who really are their customers, and to sell their product, which is really themselves. If they don't take advantage of that it hurts them," said Pomerantz.
Pop stars, most notably Bieber, Lady Gaga, and Barbados-born singer Rihanna, are particularly good with handling social media, according to Forbes.
Top celebrity couples include Beyonce and her husband Jay-Z (32), American football quarterback Tom Brady (65) and his model wife Gisele Bundchen (81), and actor Ashton Kutcher (53) and his girlfriend Mila Kunis (89).
Best actress Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence, who was No. 49, is a newcomer to the list this year, as is Hugh Jackman, who was No. 11, and new father Channing Tatum (23).

Great for Madonna too who was named highest earning and she's been around for 30 years. I remember when she TOPPED the list back in the 80s!
I don't underestimate Gaga's power and she's been really ill so it's expected that she hasn't released anything
I'm surprised Forbes even had Madonna on this list given they really hate her. At least they admit though that Madonna earned more than Oprah did last year. I bet that came through gritted teeth. Their reasoning for placing Oprah higher than Madonna however is very lame when you think of everything Madonna did last year, esp for gay rights! lol
Good placing for Taylor Swift.
I expected Beyonce to top this, but it makes sense that Gaga would chart highly. She's got one of the best social media presences, Forbes reported her as making the most headlines of any female celebrity in 2012 despite doing little, and she obviously made a lot of money from touring and her perfume success in addition to royalties, Backplane and endorsements.
This, alongside Gaga (rumoured to be) covering Rolling Stone's Woman of the Year issue should be a nice return to media.
The real one by the looks of it
OMG.... Didn't Wimprey Jump The Shark during the first 10 seconds of her first broadcast ?
Oprah's story always surprised me to be honest because she achieved so much yet you never hear anything bad about her. Usually these types are highly Machiavellian.
A movie of her life would be very interesting.
She should be president
I'm quite intrigued, surprised and happy with this list.
It's great to see Madonna doing so well, she's fantastic.
Gaga's position is REALLY surprising. Her (numerous) haters would have us believe that she is totally irrelevant but this says otherwise. I mean this past year has not gone that well at all for Gaga, with health issues and the cancellation of her tour. To do so well in spite of all this.... you go gurl!
She's a great, hard-working woman and a positive role-model.
Go Gaga!
Well Madonna has showcased that the bigger power you have you get equal ammounts of hate/negativity and love/praise/acclaim and Madonna seems to really balance that and mediate but ultimately....she is always top and so glad that name power alone ensured she was the highest earner over 30 years in her career amazing!
And yeah gaga who in half a decade has made sure shes really earnt a place high up with album/single sales/stats as well as tour and of coruse her other ventures and endorsements...again showcasing that the bigger star power you have the more negativity wil be thrown your way and ultimately gaga is only going to have more and more of that as she continues but that only means she is pushing the buttons Which is only a good thing.
Beyonce always surprises me though as to me she is always under the radar but she is always mentioend here and there and always seems to be praised for stuff...i cant describe it lol...im just always surprised with Bey....then again touring, stats, endorsements (mainly fragrances) will weigh out.
Congrats to Gaga, Madonna, Taylor, Beyonce and the rest of the top 10 as well. Quite impressive considering Gaga and Beyonce haven't released any music in the last year.
Madonna still making top 10 after 30 years. That's true staying power.
Indeed it is!
Between 2012-2013 Britney has earned an estimated $24 million dollars from her role on The X Factor USA and various other endorsement deals..... however this was not enough to get her on the list.
Looking ahead to next year I have a feeling Britney will be topping this power list... as not only has she got a new album releasing but also will be embarking on a lucrative 2 year Las Vegas residency deal.... AND quite possibly a world tour!
