Hi. I bought the national treasures greatest hits off iTunes last night . It's a great album some real classics on there , (and some that I'm not so familiar with ).
Think I like the manics as they always have meaning to their songs . So wondered what people's favourite songs of theirs are?

Not a particular fan, but I did like The Love of Richard Nixon, helped by the video of them wearing Nixon masks, and the fact that it came out at the time the equally sinister George W Bush was about to be re-elected.

I also like Let Robeson Sing, apart from the fact that the line 'went to Cuba to meet Castro' doesn't scan very well. In fact I've often thought that of them - they clearly have so much to say lyrically that they try to pack too much into a song, either literally when lines don't scan, or metaphorically, when you just think 'that's too heavy'.

Mine would be (today) La Tristessa Durera but I'm very fond of Design for Life.

Weren't they the first western band to visit Cuba?

Ooh, I'm not sure, but I wouldn't be surprised, they are very pro-Cuban.

The line though refers to American actor/singer Paul Robeson, whose story they are telling in the song... as usual for them, they are a very educational group, as I knew nothing about Robeson before I heard the song, and then you want to go and look him up to see what the song is referring to.

Motorcyle Emptiness is pretty much the only track I've heard by them that I like. But I do really like it!

Weren't they the first western band to visit Cuba?

First western band to play a concert there, I believe. Which they released on DVD...

Really difficult to choose. The entire Holy Bible album is amazing and it doesn't feel fair to pick one or two tracks as favourites from that. Otherwise there's:

    Motorcycle Emptiness
    Motown Junk
    Ocean Spray
    Small Black Flowers...
    Ready For Drowning
    You Love Us (original version)

I only started listening to Manic Street Preachers about a year ago. Motorcycle Emptiness, So Why So Sad and Tsunami come to mind.

    Great band.

I've always been fond of Roses in the Hospital but there are far too many to choose from, I could choose virtually anything from Generation Terrorists, Gold against the Soul or The Holy Bible and probably a couple from their other albums.
