Hi
I have an old Panasonic TV linked up to Sky.
I was just watching a recorded program when this screeching noise started, can't hear the program now.
It's on all channels so not the recoding.
Do I just chuck the TV or can it be saved?
Anything really simple I can do (magic probably!) to get it working properly?
Thanks

tried switching power off at wall for 20 seconds ?
On all channels.
Yep, I'm female, that's my first course of action
If its on all channels , not just sky; then it sounds bad.
what does it sound like on Freeview ?
So if it is still making a noise try putting the Sky box into stand-by and see if the noise stops. Turn the Sky box back on and see if it returns. Now switch to a Freeview channel on the TV's internal tuner but keep the Sky box turned on.
If you only get the noise when the Sky box is on and the TV is switched to the Sky input then chances are it's the Sky box and not the telly.
I don't have Freeview and can't get a picture if I take Sky offline.
All you need do is turn off the Sky box while the noise is being made. If it stops then that indicates it might be the Sky box. Similarly if you switch to some other source on the TV, even a non-existent Freeview channel and the noise stops then that too can indicate the Sky box is the problem.
The point is, if it is a fault with the TV then chances are it will make the noise whether or not the Sky box is on or off and will also make the noise if you switch to watching something else, even if there is nothing on the source you switch to.
If however the noise only ever happens when the TV is switched to the Sky box input and the Sky box is turned on then you have to suspect the Sky box.
Ideally to confirm this you would need to plug the Sky box into another TV. If the same noise appears then it's the Sky box most likely.
Another thing to try is to swap the lead between Sky box and TV. It might be a dodgy cable but at least that is fairly easy to eliminate.
Does the sound come from the TV's speakers, or is it a mechanical noise from the back of the set?.
Can the OP alter the volume of the noise with the volume control, and does muting stop it?.
Thank you for taking the time to reply.
Have switched off Sky box and still makes noise.
Can't try it in another TV yet but will do.....I do think though it's the TV. It's an old Panasonic, weighty number, and it may well have had it's day.
When you say old weighty number do you mean it is an old CRT TV and not one of the newer slim LCD,LED, Plasma TV's.
It definitely ISN'T a newer slim model!
if an old crt type tv then the line output transformer. very few places now replace these so probably a new tv ......
if flat screen then more difficult to say. the smps power supplies in such equipment can start making noises but far more likely to be buzzing or humming.
follow suggestions in above posts. determine which gadget it is by switching on only one at a time. check noise is from inside the device not through speakers .....
And that was my son's first action
Didn't work
Well, 17 posts so far, and still not the basic information if it's coming out of the speakers or not?.
So knowing where to thump might not be relevant at all anyway
Relevant? What basic information?
I've said it's not Sky box. Have now fixed up teeny tiny TV to Sky and NO SCREECHING! Yay!
If it's screeching out of the speakers or not, and assuming it was, does the volume and mute affect it.
Out of speakers. Volume and mute affect it. Mute stops it.
I don't know what CRT is.
I've said, with my limited knowledge of TVs, it's old, very deep, and that's it.
It's Panasonic and has better picture definition thatn the modern slim screens - which is why I've kept it.
plug some PC speakers into the headphone socket on your TV
Not going to help, as it would just feed the noise to the external speakers.
As it's an old CRT set, just bin it and buy a modern TV.
