Holiday On The Buses , the bit where Stan throws his lit cigarette end into the petrol filled toilet. And why oh why do they keep moving threads which were fine where they were ?
Holiday On The Buses???
I think you need to look up the definition of 'haunting'...
Snowtown - an Australian indie film about a serial killer. It's a true story and well acted so it feels like you're watching it for real - even though the majority of the violence is off screen I thought it was horrific.
The strangulation scene in the bathroom stayed with me for a while afterwards, it felt disturbingly real, even moreso when you consider that it actually happened.
For me, the film Martyrs stuck with me for a good few weeks after i first watched it, as did Salo and August Underground's Mordum (those last two actually left me feeling "dirty").
I couldn't face watching Threads again, but can anyone tell me if we were shown what happened to Jimmy? I can only remember him running along the street and don't remember seeing him again after that.
Another TV programme that has stayed with me all my life was an adaptation of the M.R. James story "Casting The Runes". It must have been on in the 70s - I remember watching it with my mum and it gave us both the willies! We never forgot it.

It doesn’t hold up to modern eyes I’m afraid. The classic Night/Curse of the Demon might be a less literal translation of James’ tale to the screen but it’s a far more effective one.

There's been a few versions. After posting, I went looking for it and it was earlier than I thought - 1968.
I know this was a resent film but others in the past have been:
Johnny got his gun, I was only @11 years old and had a tv in the bedroom for the first time. I watched it late on a Sunday night with the sound down. Upset me for weeks after, and over 30 years later still does.
That reminds me, "Orphan" anyone seen that? It was horrible and unlike some films I didn't manage to guess what was to happen until the reveal at the end.
I guessed the twist when she threatened the boy in his bed. Good film.

Those poor little boys. It just frightened me so much and the fact that it was a true story really affected me
Limbo
Avalon (Oshii)
A triumph of sound design and cinematography.
Seeing Tina dragged up the wall completely freaked me out.

The sounds of the boy banging on his bath still haunt me. Silly, really.

Sadly it hasn't survived, except for this trailer
The violence came out of the blue and it seemed so real, like you were watching a documentary.

One of my favourite films, stays with me for weeks every time I watch it, as do Jeux Interdits and The Grandmother http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vN4kQJa0X4U
