Tough times for Orion at the minute, and not just on the football coverage side of things. Premiership commentary rights have been getting more and more expensive, and Orion are just not getting the advertising revenue to support it.
Hmmm. I think it's just a fudged way of blagging listeners. Translates to me as they haven't got the frequencies now to cover all the games as they did previously (by using fm) and claiming rights issues is a way to try to explain that. Or would be technically possible to cover them all without using fm?

Surely it is possible in the West Midlands between WM & Free 80's to get some sort of coverage of your local Premiership / Football League team? (Unless you have a loyalty to a certain station?)
I'm assuming that WM & Free 80's do not have a 'gentleman's agreement' over which match gets transmitted on what waveband, for example, if WM transmits a Villa match on FM & Birmingham match on DAB, then Free 80's does not do the opposite (AM rather than FM!)?
not that it really matters on the football coverage thread but is there any reason WM couldn't have used 5live commentary from Chris Mitchell? sending additional people for a 2 minute race does seem a bit OTT to me.
I posted the clarification as to what WM did on here as it was where I'd posted details of their mostly football-based sports coverage on Saturday (I shall post a fuller list including details of WM's coverage of Warwickshire CCC's recent matches over on the Radio Sports Commentators and Reporters thread).
It's rare that I disagree with your analysis of things on here Steve but I have to in this instance, I think it's a really good thing that BBC Local Radio were able to provide coverage of the Paralympic Games in addition to what was available nationally. Having the additional coverage allowed the service the BBC provided to be broader and cover British athletes from various areas in more detail than what national radio was limited to.
From what I heard, BBC Radio 5 Live did a good job of covering the Paralympics but they could only provide so much coverage, what with the various events happening at any one time as well as the other sports they cover and commitments they have. I think allowing BBC Local Radio to provide coverage of their local Paralympians, with many such stations having followed particular athletes local to them far closer than any other broadcaster will have, was fitting and I'm sure will have allowed for their events to have been broadcast when 5 Live and Channel 4 were committed elsewhere. Perhaps Ellie Simmonds, as the "face of the Games", isn't the best example to demonstrate this point but I'm sure there will be examples of other athletes getting far more in-depth live coverage on the BBC Local Radio stations serving the area they are from than they got nationally.
Also, it wasn't as if BBC WM just sent Mike Taylor down for one race. I know they had been broadcasting their drivetime programme The Paul Franks Show from outside the Olympic Stadium last week, as they did for a few days during the Olympic Games, with Mike reporting from both the stadium and the Aquatics Centre once Warwickshire's County Championship game was over from Thursday onwards. I presume other local radio stations, or at least those covering areas with strong Paralympic representation, will have been able to do something similar.
All in all I think it was a good thing that BBC Local Radio was given the opportunity to cover the Olympics and Paralympics along with 5 Live.

Disappointing that tonight's England Under-21 international wasn't a commentary game anywhere (unless a local radio stations covering Chesterfield picked it up and I'm not aware of it), what with Radio 5 Live covering the US Open Final in the tennis and 5 Live Sports Extra covering the cricket. When The FA renewed their national radio deal I was hoping talkSPORT would gain the ability to do commentary on England Under-21s' home games but it wasn't mentioned that anyone had brought rights to these matches.

fair enough difference, i hadn't realised Mike had been there for a good proportion of the event already.
also, just to be clear, my comment about it not mattering on the football thread wasn't in any way a dig at you for posting, more a light-hearted apology for asking the question and taking the thread somewhat o/t.

Just to be clear, I'm not slagging off the Republic, its just you aren't playing well and getting results and we are playing well but not getting anything.
talkSPORT's commentaries from the opening round of fixtures in this season's Champions League are:
Tuesday 18th September - Real Madrid v Manchester City - with Sam Matterface and Andy Gray, hosted by Richard Keys live from the Bernabeu Stadium.
Wednesday 19th September - Chelsea v Juventus - hosted by Danny Kelly. There's no word on commentators, but I'd imagine Stan Collymore may be involved.
It appears BBC Radio 5 Live are also broadcasting live commentary of both of those games too.

Thanks for posting those details 4-4-2, I was going to ask if talkSPORT had announced which Champions League games they were doing commentary on next week.
In addition, John Roder has posted this on his blog: "Looking forward to returning to talkSPORT this month, after a very enjoyable Euro 2012 for them, as part of a manic week of seven commentaries in seven days." I hear he'll be doing commentary on Tottenham v Lazio in the Europa League for them next Thursday.
Looking towards this weekend, Nigel Pearson has tweeted that will be commentating on Sunderland v Liverpool with Stan Collymore on Saturday evening in the absence of Sam Matterface (who is holidaying in the Algarve at the moment). Manchester United v Wigan Athletic will be the 3pm Saturday afternoon commentary game on Absolute Radio (in the UK), Today FM (Republic of Ireland) and talkSPORT Live (internationally). Radio 5 Live have opted for QPR v Chelsea, which is where Adrian Durham will be presenting Matchday Live from, with his pundits being Ray Parlour at Arsenal v Southampton and Michael Gray at Stoke v Manchester City.
It is also my understanding that talkSPORT will broadcast one live commentary in the League Cup Third Round in a couple of weeks time. I believe it'll be Manchester United v Newcastle on Wednesday 26th September.
I think BBC Radio 5 Live are doing Carlisle v Tottenham that night, with Leeds v Everton the night before.
Thanks for posting that information as well. I guess that means talkSPORT will have a similar Football League deal to the one they had in 2004/05 - giving them non-exclusive rights to do League Cup commentaries from every round once the Premier League teams in European competitions enter up until and including the final, plus the three Football League Play-Off Finals (as has been the case every year since that season). With this extension of their Football League contract, their newly-won FA Cup and England rights and coverage of the Europa League as well as the Champions League, talkSPORT's live football portfolio is as strong as it ever has been. Should they preserve (or perhaps even increase) the Premier League contracts they hold for next season onwards, they'll be well set up for a long time to come.
