New discs are unreadable on the player and sony are claiming that new blue ray formats mean that ALL players need regular firmware upgrades. Sony are no longer supporting the player.
The player was purchased 14 months ago (the retailer still sells it).
I am going down the road of not fit for purpose. All sales literature says it plays blue ray. Not "Blue ray version xxx"
Can I confirm that it is a common that players stop working with new discs due to changes in the blue ray standard.

I would say that upgrading the firmware without an internet connection can be a pain. I did manage to upgrade mine using a CD but only after a few hours of trying and only succeeding by ignoring Sony's instructions (Sony's instruction caused the machine to lock up and I had to dismantle the machine to get he disk out).
My player, a Sony BDP-S350, is much older than yours and apart from 3D disks I have so far not found a single Blu-Ray disk it won't play. And the last firmware update it had is probably more than 12 months ago.
What discs are you trying to use?
I've got the same player, but have had no issues with my most recent purchases.
PS. it's Blu-Ray not Blue Ray.
I've not heard of any problems on that model not playing new discs - but as we've said all along, tell us what discs it won't play (and what the actual effect is) so others with the same discs can comment.
Not really, it has everything Blu-Ray does, 1080P picture, HD audio, picture in picture, advanced menus, online features etc. Despite the fact it failed, technically it is no worse than Blu-Ray and it could have easily gone either way for the first couple of years, in fact a lot of people thought HD DVD would win for a while as it was (a little) more affordable.
I suspect Blu-Ray benefited from Sony's backing with it's integration into the PS3 ultimately playing a part.
HD DVD may be dead but it is still an ace format and allowed me to build up a 100+ HD movie collection that I would have never been able to afford on Blu-Ray and are every bit as good as their Blu-Ray counterparts.
I suspect it was entirely down to the PS3?, it provided an incredibly cheap way to get a BD Player, with the added bonus of gaming if you wanted.
As an engineer, I recommended PS3's to loads of customers, despite the fact we don't sell them
This gave BD a massive lead over HD-DVD, which resulted in HD-DVD failing.
Yes, much like the PS2 with DVD. I too think the PS3 is a great Bluray player, afterall how many other Bluray players from 2007 can support all of the formats features, even 3D? None I'll bet.
I used to have a classic Phat PS3 as my main Bluray player but now have a slim PS3 (not the latest one) as my main player because the laser went in the phat.
I often wonder if things would have been different if the 360 had come out with HD DVD as standard instead of an add on but I guess they just didn't have that option back in 2005, at least without making it prohibitively expensive.
I have that model, had no problems at all.Have you tried the disc on another player?
The OP seems to have left the thread, it's always annoying when people start threads and then ignore them.
