If you're not listening to John McEnroe on '6Love6' please do go back and listen on the iPlayer. While he was a legendary player, he's a terrible presenter and he's got Henman next to him as just as bad. Awful programme, and I hope we never hear him doing this again. The rudest part was cutting off the cricket report before he started because it was boring. Utterly dreadful.

I couldn't listen to all of it, I had to tune out half way through it was too cringe worthy. No doubt the novelty value of having a former great like McEnroe has clouded the BBC's judgement and like you said, he is a truly awful radio host.

Hearing Mr McEnroe struggle to pronounce British place names may have some passing comedic value first time round, but now it is embarrassing for everyone, including, I'd guess, those alongside McEnroe in the studio, and is hardly fitting content for what is supposed to be the "home of live news and sport".

The BBC needs to give Radio 5 Live a good old shaking, and fast.

I can't understand why they just wouldn't put a proper host next to him and then they'd actually get value for money from using him as an expert to answer to calls. As it was, as you say, just embarrassing to listen to.

Why the aversion to use broadcasters over ex-sportsmen?

The curious thing was that listening to JP McEnroe's responses to callers he clearly sounded like for the most part he had not the vaguest interest in what they had to say anyway..Yet all these deluded dumbo callers are probably telling their mates *ooh, I spoke to John McEnroe yesterday" believing it's some form of oneupmanship. :(

Well, she is certainly a victim!

A policeman acting on behalf of the State was acting undercover when probably the case didn't warrant it; formed a relationship with the woman when he shouldn't have; disappeared afterwards, IIRC; and quite possibly isn't contributing to the costs of parenting (this point isn't mentioned in the reporting I've seen)..

Let me put it another way by asking you a question.

If this woman had later become your wife, or if this woman happened to be your daughter, how would you be advising her to act right now?

The two obvious courses are to tell the world how you were used with little regard for your welfare; or else you just don't want any fuss and keep quiet about the whole thing in order to lead a quiet life.

Both courses of action have advantages and long-lasting consequences.

Yes, "raped by the State" is somewhat extreme, but she was abused by a representative of the State, and I for one want to know when the people who are supposed to protect and care for us misuse their position.

    Lordy Lordy ..a Grauniad quote

She wasnt abused .She willingly got laid by a guy she presumably fancied. He lied about his background. Many other unscrupulous guys do exactly the same - c'est la vie. Some women really need to wise up.

    Interesting piece in the Telegraph

Why is blokey BBC Radio 5 Live airing a show about vaginas and babies?
    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/women/mother-tongue/10134296/Why-is-blokey-BBC-Radio-5-Live-airing-a-show-about-vaginas-and-babies.html

I've just read the Telegraph article, which I note was written for the Women's Family column, by a female journalist who I have never heard of. Not up to their usual standard. She seemed to be rather sympathetic to Bump Club and Jonathon Wall.

The 45 comments which followed the article were more interesting. If the FiveLive luvvies on this board thought that some of our posters' comments were over the top, they are mild compared to those comments. VD and Bacon are featured heavily in the comments. I thought I was reading Digital Spy for a while.

Describing 5 live as blokey radio is so out of date, with every show between 6.30am and 7pm apart from Bacon being either presented or co-presented by women. With VD’s victim misery fest it has gone too far the other way.

Now there is no reason for this post to be reported and removed is there?

Indeed, and with 5 Live committed to covering more women's sport even the current male dominance of 5 Live's non-sporting output could be short lived too.

That still won't suit some people though. The mere existence of men - in any capacity - is cause for complaint for some...

Can anyone tell me what is going on.

    Oh I know....

I love Radio 5 and think everything they do or say is wonderful.

I've enjoyed reading this thread and (sometimes) contributing to it but this is just crazy

I shall go back to the sports forum where proper discussions are seemingly allowed.
I shall refrain from posting here

I think I'll give that a pass based on your description! :D

Apparently he told Charles Dagnall to go and have a beer. I think Jon Gaunt is the only presenter I've heard cutting off a sports reporter in such a way before, so McEnroe is in esteemed company there.

Yes, it annoys me. It's the assumption that just because someone was good at the sport and is "name" then they will be competent as a presenter or commentator. I have no problem with those who have shown some ability but others are terrible and must only be there because they are mates with the producer.

Seems to be a daily thing now as well to run some story about banning Page 3. Some woman was 'upset' that 12 year old boys might look at Page 3 (as if that's going to poison their mind) and I'm sure she said something about going into a takeway or something and the Sun was the only paper they had and she didn't want to buy it. She sounded like a Guardian reader so I doubt if she'd ever buy the Sun anyway.

Nikki Campbell was at it again this morning. Anyone would think the BBC has an agenda.

At 1012 hours this morning James O'Brien of LBC announced his show is receiving twice as many listeners as Radio Five. He is either a liar or Victim Radio is shedding listeners as 99% of correspondents thought.

I can't believe VD's programme now. It seems that every body in the country are either victims or vulnerable !

What a shame I missed this, no worries though tomorrow's show contains interviews with 2 women who were 'raped by the state'

I saw some figures yesterday which were part of a report to Ofcom regarding listening figures, (not sure whether it was about DAB or FM) There were about 7 stations listed and 5live came bottom. Even Heart and some other rubbish commercial stations came above 5live. I can't find the link now but if I find it I'll post it. I rather think LBC was in the chart so they must have been above 5live as they were 7th out of 7

Foggitty's completely redundant at Wimbledon. She clearly knows damn all about tennis, so her conversations with commentators and players are very limited. All she does is sum up and cut to the travel and news which could easily be done by one of the other presenters. Paid to watch tennis - nice work if you can get it.

And to think LBC is not a national ststion unlike Radio5. (excl. Dab). Would be good if LBC published the stats.

Radio 5 live has turned into a very dreary preachathon, it's hardly surprisingly that people can't be bothered with it.

Page 96 of the 5 Live forum - non-stop whining with a bit of casual sexism (at best) querying the motives of a woman who was conned by a bloke thrown into the mix. Lovely.

I'm just baffled. Why listen if the station infuriates you all so much? Mind you, why do I keep coming on here? It's like we're all masochists.

I'm aware of the logic that people are more likely to be negative than positive in their comments about anything, but it's just dominant on here.

In their first live radio interviews, two women deceived into forming relationships with undercover police officers tell Victoria Derbyshire their stories.

Don’t worry p_c_u_k I won’t be listening to yet more ‘victims’ on VD

It's funny how criticisms of male presenters (such as my criticism of John Inverdale) never draw accusations of "sexism"...

1 isn't enough, so now we need 2 more, in the same show. Next time it'll be 3.

You don't have to wait until 10 AM to find out what's happening on Victoria Derbyshire's Victims Club. It is on the website, and promoted in other shows.

Today it is the same subject as earlier in the week. Earlier in the thread, 5 Live was defended when not discussing EU matters on the phone-in after discussing it earlier that week.
    Still droning on at 10.55.

Is that because there were two of them or because the sob stories are getting longer? I think the latter, because there were more than two people in the housing story I mentioned on a previous page and those interviews were over by 10:30 Usually if there aren't any delays caused by developing news stories, the telling of a lead sob story should have been completed by 10:35.

Funny that when men get duped by women and there are plenty of male politicians who have had their pillow talk splashed all over the media they get shown no sympathy.

Vince Cable got caught out by a couple of giggling female hacks and the media just called him a sad old man for falling for a bit of female attention and I bet there have been plenty of female undercover officers who have had affairs with men, it's just men never run to the press to sell their story.
