Already announced it's being axed but I assume Friday is the last appearance of the 0530 ITV Early Morning News as it doesn't appear in the schedules after Friday. It was always under resourced by comparison with the BBC 5-6 am News and consisted largely of repeats of ITV News at Ten and clips from NBC Nightly News replete with Brian Williams. Then at 6 am came GMTV/Daybreak with a completely different news agenda. But sorry to see three-and-a-half hours of news a week disappear.

Everyone in the UK gets the BBC News Channel and more than 90% of them get Sky News via satellite, cable or Freeview. Satellite and cable viewers also have CNN International and Euronews. There's also the internet. Therefore, the 5:30 a.m. bulletin on ITV became surplus to requirements years ago. Almost nobody watched it anymore.

On a separate but related matter, ITV usually has 3 bulletins on Christmas Day (apart from the 5:55 a.m. bulletin, which is no more. However, there are only 2 bulletins on Christmas Day - at 1:15 and 8:30. Did ITV have to get permission from Ofcom for reducing the number of its Christmas Day bulletins?

Saturday 22nd December is the last scheduled ITV Early Morning News at 05:30am.

Depends on the party Friday Lunch / Night !!

It's a pity it's going, it is a nice summary before SKY News & BBC Breakfast at 06:00am.

And there's are NO scrolling graphics.

I know it's a rehash of the previous evenings bulletin, but even so.

With a mug of tea and some toast & marmalade, a nice way to start the day.

Your argument could equally apply to ITV News at 1.30, 6.30 and Ten

Is it ITN that is surplus to requirements, at least in its present form? Would it not make sense for ITN and Sky News to merge?

The bulletins at 1:30 p.m., 6:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. still get more viewers than the 5:30 a.m. bulletin did.

No. TV news plurality is essential.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ITV_News
ITV News has the second-largest television news audience in the United Kingdom, second only to BBC News (other broadcasters such as Sky News, Channel 4 News and 5 News count their audiences in hundreds of thousands).

That wasn't my point - there are now a multitude of other channels available offering news in many different shapes and forms. In audience terms the BBC is far ahead of ITV - more than double the breakfast audience for instance.

The 5:30 a.m. bulletin was surplus to requirements because people who want overnight news coverage can watch the BBC News Channel or Sky News. That is separate from the issue of the audience for daytime and evening news coverage.

There is no ITV News programme on at Breakfast time so that is irrelevant

I was one of its viewers. Had on in background as leave for work at 6am.

Was much better than BBC News at that time. Is the World feed with a few UK stories dropped in the ad breaks. Plus they waste 10 minutes from 5.45 to 5.55 on a world paper review, before the weather.

Must have been one heck of a party as it didn't appear this morning despite being billed in some listings magazines

On a serious point with Daybreak off the air until December 2 there will be no news presence on ITV between the end of News at Ten and whenever the lunchtime bulletin is scheduled, nearly 14 hours. In the event of a major news story it is gifting the BBC probably millions of viewers.

People are in bed for the majority of that time, particularly at Christmas when people have a lie in.
