What are the greatest performances delivered that were recognised by the Academy Awards? It has to be Robert De Niro for Raging Bull?

Jack Nicholson for One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest.

Another vote for Charlize Theron as well.

Adrien Brody in The Pianist, stands out as the main one for me, sensational.

Hopkins and Foster for Silence Of The Lambs, two brilliant performances.

Marlon Brando in 'On the Waterfront' and 'The Godfather' are both incredible performances.

    Couldn't agree more.

    Also, Kathy Bates - Misery.

My final choice is Marissa Tomei for 'My Cousin Vinny'.
I know I'll probably get slated for this, but IMO she gave the best comedic performance of the last 30 years in that film.

She made an average film totally brilliant.
The fact that she stole every scene she was in was very impressive when you consider most of her performance was against Joe Pesci.
