Which is unfortunate for a certain celeb, because if you search his name on Twitter, the Kitty seems to be well and truly out of the bag.

The anonymity of those arrested can work against people in cases like this, where there's a huge amount of gossip going on, sadly.

Indications from journos on twitter are that it's not a 'hold the front page' arrest. Not anyone famous.

In fairness, we don't actually know he's an East Londoner, just that he was arrested in East London.

Have you just based that on someone being 72, Ken Clark is 72 ???

As are Tom Jones and Ringo Starr. All this plucking 72 year old celebs at random is pure speculation and the general description of '72' could apply to any number of people.
Leave them alone, nothing worth publishing until it's fact not rumour.

Anyone know the legal distinction between 'cleared' and 'no charge'?

I seem to remember something on the legal programme on Radio 4 (name escapes me) about cleared being no crime and "no charge" basically meaning insufficient evidence.

:mad::mad: Its hardly worth the bother of a trial!
What on earth is the judge talking about? ......"Ovenden had a sexual interest in children "at that time". At that time? Does it ever change?

This ain't a legal definition but...

In my chart, the first line is date of event, usually arrest and if a charge was brought on that day.

If you believe innocent until proven guilty then it's fair to say they've been cleared if someone is released from arrest or the charges dropped.

The oppressive state machine does not like to admit it arrested the wrong person so someone will not often be 'cleared' unless they go to trial, they will instead be released due to insufficient evidence.

Which can often mean a complaint was made but there is no evidence at all to back it up, it could mean the person is innocent entirely or it could be they are guilty but have got away with it . However if they are inncoent and named there will be the "no smoke without fire" brigade for ever more.

He (Cottle) also said he had to consider Ovenden's age, health self-inflicted punishment, such as the damage to his reputation as an artist which had been "severely tarnished".

    What rubbish is that?

That shouldn't be a consideration in his summing up.
