What is a good download/upload speed?
I've been doing one of those 'online speed test' thingies...
http://www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk/
...to be exact.
The results were...
Download - 16368kbps
Upload 707kbps
Thing is that I'm wondering if I'm getting much 'bang' for my 'buck' as it were. Well actually, I don't pay for the internet in the house but the house has three four computers using the connection at any one time.
...so what is considered a good speed thing and would mine qualify?

Most download speedtests are not accurate and VM don't have an upload speedtest so the 700+kb/s looks ok.
If you goto http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com/ and download 2 seperate files and check the transfer rate.. add them together and see what you get.
On a 20mb connection I find most people tend to get about 1,800+kb/s
That's fine in my eyes Although 2,000+ is preferable
Virgin Engineers use this for actual Speed Testing for Virgin Networks :
http://80.3.144.194/speedtest/login.php
User ID is : virgin
Password is : wolverhampton
On next page Select 'DUDLEY'
Change Size drop-down to '100MB'
Select ' Start Test'
And yes it is for 50Mb ......am assuming it may not be accurate for others speeds as the algorithm may be different to calculate it.
File size transferred : 10.0 MB (10485760 bytes)
Total time taken : 8.66 seconds (8658 milliseconds)
Throughput : 1211.0 KB/sec [Kilobyte-per-second]
= 1.21 MB/sec [Megabyte-per-second]
= 9688.0 Kbps [Kilobit-per-second]
= 9.69 Mbps [Megabit-per-second]
I'm on 50Mb and my reslults this morning are :
File size transferred : 100.0 MB (104857600 bytes)
Total time taken : 17.55 seconds (17547 milliseconds)
Throughput : 5975.0 KB/sec [Kilobyte-per-second]
= 5.97 MB/sec [Megabyte-per-second]
= 47800.0 Kbps [Kilobit-per-second]
= 47.8 Mbps [Megabit-per-second]
I also posted this on the HUKD Forums and ALL of the folk who have posted on there seem to get accurate results ....no matter what speed they are on.
So if anyone is getting a crap speed .....i'd get it checked out !!!!
