If sex makes you feel ashamed then I'd say you've got problems and should seek help.

Yes, they're debauched, they're decadent, it's the fall of Rome, we get it! Now put them away madam, you'll catch your death...

Some shows like to show off. HBO and Showtime are one of the few very networks who allow or get away with really explicit sex scenes. True Blood had a lot of it in it's earlier seasons but it's become a rare thing now

It's something the premium pay networks use to differentiate their content when on network TV (the free channels) all nudity and virtually all swearing is banned.

Look at other HBO shows like Rome and Broadwalk Empire they also have heaps of violence and nudity / sex scenes.

The way people have sex can tell you a lot about them.

Viserys likes to be pampered and have his 'ego' massaged. Cersei and Jaime do the deed in secret. Littlefinger is a voyeur who pulls the strings of his puppets from afar. Tyrion is desperate to be loved. Theon sees women as objects of conquest. Jon Snow is a boyish virgin beneath the guise of hero. Joffrey is a cruel sadist. Khal Drogo goes from riding brute to ridden lover; Daenerys goes from victim to queen.

I read a recent article where the people behind the programme said that was precisely the reasons for the sex scenes, because whilst you can put on a facade when it comes to having a public persona, the mask falls off completely during sex and the real person is revealed (as it were! :D)

Although threads like this do show what a nation of prudes this country is rapidly becoming.

Someone else might have said they watch for the story and not to see people being disembowelled and dismembered.

At what point does the "cleaning up" of the images leave us with just another childish fantasy story?

I'm so grateful that this sort of adult fantasy drama can be really successful on mainstream TV. Long may it continue.

I always find it odd that people rarely complain about extreme violence, but as soon as a female nipple is shown....

But then I also think "I'm no prude but..." = Prude.

It's hard to believe that forty years ago it was the norm in ITV/BBC 9pm dramas to have copious amounts of nudity.

It does alarm me a little that extreme gore is often looked at as completely relevant and fine where as someone taking their clothes off seems to get an awful lot of negativity and anger. Sure, they could avoid sex in the show just like other shows could avoid violence and others could avoid offensive dialogue, but then it's all subjective.

I think that the sex fits in well with the feel of the show, nope...I'm no pervert and I don't watch the show to see "boobs" but I think it adds to the atmosphere and character development that is important in a story-heavy show like this. The nudity has been lessened since Season 2 began anyway, and that's fine, but it seems very silly to condemn something that is almost a defining characteristic.

It reminds me of the "R-Rated" documentary from a couple of years ago, where movies with bad language and extremely graphic violence was being passed as PG-13 in the US yet one ****ing nipple was shown and the censors immediately slapped an "R" rating on the box.

    Very silly indeed.

    As I was a teenager in the 1970s, I agree. :D

The average holiday programme, shown much earlier in the evening, often had far more nudity then than most post-watershed TV dramas do today.

Imagine the fuss if the likes of Holiday and Wish You Were Here? were shown with the same content @ 7pm today as they were then!

Yeah, the BBC's holiday programme had a topless woman bouncing out of a swimming pool one year.

I dont watch it but I agree with this. Why should not wanting to see sex on TV make you a prude? What a stupid thing to say.

There is usually way too much of nudity and sex in these types of shows, really put me off them tbh.

If these were films, they'd get slated by critics and rightly so, but tv shows tend to get away with as they have a lot more time to fill.

if a drama is good then how could that same drama with boob not be better?
