What do you think caused the downfall of these artists?

Sophie Ellis Bextor & Jamelia
Sophie was pretty huge 2000 - 2002 she featured on the single of the summer of 2000 "Goovejet (if this aint love)" then in 2001 her solo album was a huge commercial hit with lots of hit singles and critical acclaim/Brit recognition.
Then in 2003 she released her sophomore album which underperformed and none of her other albums really dented the charts much at all.
As for Jamelia when "Superstar" was released she was HUGE now I don't even know if she is still on planet earth.
Neither came from a reality background either. So what do you think? lack of radio support/the music being below par/people moving on?

Agreed alot of the time it's timing. Sometimes if an artist wait to long the market moves on and there simply is no interest. Other times the materila may be sub-par or be so different it alients the core audience whilst not bringing in any new fans. and sometimes it's just bad luck.
However, Sophie's success was imo always based on her material and the production. That can only last for so long.
The one I am puzzled by is Mika he was truly massive in the UK had a massive selling album even more so considering the still fairly low selling 2007/08 years. An album crammed full of hit singles and all the singles achieving chart success despite big album sales of 'Life in Cartoon Motion'.
'We are Golden' did well but then the singles and albums went down and the third completely bombed though he does well in certain European countries still.
Mika was massive worldwide, his 1st album is awsome & sold like crazy... he sold 19.850.000 copies worldwide according to wikipedia.
I also bought the second one because I didn't even think I could be disapointed (despite the 1st single being underwhelming). But I found the album so so and moved on like so many people... Can't find the sales for this one, but they were really bad compared to the 1st one I think.
He seems to have done a duet with a current young female singer: Ariana Grande...
But like you, I wonder how someone at his incredible level of success could disapear like that...
I think Duffy is an even bigger anomaly. Her album sold 2m alone in the uk and bagged her a grammy and WW success. Second album bombed on an equally massive scale.
I think that's down once again to a combination of timings, awful single choices and that diet coke advert!
She was huge in 2008. Then she comes back two years later, after a fairly quiet 2009, with the monstrosity "Well, Well, Well"... of course she was going to fail.
However the fact that after that single was launched and bombed that there wasn't an attempt to rescue her career is baffling. The record label just seemed to give up, which I agree, is a mystery.
There was that combination of as youu say timing and that moment of mass overexposure and bad single. But then no rescue considering it wasn't a complete bomb. Sometimes i think the label loses faith and its easier to cut their losses.
I think Shoot from the Hip is really underrated.
I'll never forget how she slammed Leona calling her a "poor man's Mariah Carey destined to fade into obscurity", yet a few months later Leona topped the US charts. If Jamelia kept her mouth shut and changed her attitude, she may not have been in the position she is now, i.e. nowhere.
Well she wasn't entirely wrong Leona's career is ona continuing downward spiral As for SEB i think she did adapt with Make A Scene but it was too little to late and she was destined to fade as time passed by as she was only ever as strong as her singles.
Same goes for anyone. But with Leona at the time, it was dumb to say that, she was on fire.
Same here. I loved that band and saw them live twice in 1998. Shame their 2nd album was never released. Going by the demos that leaked online it would have been a fantastic album!
As for Sophie solo I do like a lot of her stuff. She's released some great singles that I think should have done much better in the charts but I think a lot of her album tracks were quite bland and samey, which is a shame. Her last album Make A Scene I only like about 3 songs on, the rest all sort of merges into one for me. I still think her best solo single is Catch You. Brilliant song!
As for Jamelia, the only song I ever liked by her is Money.
I think with Jamelia, her materials after Superstar just didn't live up to it, I guess. Mika is an interesting case though. After We Are Golden, he really did seem to have disappeared in the US/UK Market. But, he did really well with his latest studio album in other regions, especially in France. Mika is significantly more bigger in Europe than the UK itself.
I also find Duffy's case interesting. I also find it odd that a label would give up on Endlessly that quickly. Even if Well, Well, Well tanked and the album got severely massacred by the critics, I thought there would be a follow-up single, just to ease the pain a bit. At least when Christina Aguilera flopped with her Bionic era with Not Myself Tonight, the label attempted again by releasing You Lost Me, WooHoo (was that a single release?) and her film Burlesque, which very underperformed at the box office. Her Lotus era suffered the same fate, despite the lead single, Your Body, being better received. Again, the label tried again with a follow-up, Just a Fool, which was a duet with Blake Shelton.
Nelly Furtado is another artist that might fit this category. She had a massive first album, a decent second album and her Loose album which exploded like crazy. She released a Spanish album, Mi Plan then was absent for quite a while aside from a few Timbaland cameos. Spirit Indestructible did horribly in sales and has affected some of her tour dates. Yes, absence did play a massive factor here but I would have not chosen Big Hoops as a lead single to begin with.
Sophie Ellis Bextor also took some time out.
Pop singers are basically just models on a Runway way. They can be easily replaced and forgotten by the GP.
