The X Factor - Scoring System (Idea)

I was thinking about all the TV singing competitions today and how crowded the genre is, probably too crowded for it's own good. Simon seems to really want to show a clear differentiation between his show's and their competitors. Simon has really revamped the middle section of The X Factor (USA / UK) but I actually think it's the audition rounds that are quite predictable and very similar across the board. To change things up a bit, and to do something that other singing competitions don't have in place, why not introduce a scoring system instead of the usual yes/no responses to initial auditions?
After performing, the contestants would be scored out of ten by each judge. In order to pass to the next stage they'd need at least 20 out of a possible 40.
By doing this, at the end of the auditions, we'd be able to establish who the front runners are, and what contestants need to improve.
Thoughts on this?

Yeah that would work definitely
I think the same
Then we'd only use them for the auditions?
It might be a little bit trickier to do it on a show like X Factor though because the judges are not impartial.
Can't see it happening though.
There's not much tension anyway, contestants get through with three yeses so the "you've got four yeses" part is nothing really important.
