Every now and then I get a pop up telling me an update is available for Microsoft Silverlight.
What is Microsoft Silverlight?
I don't remember installing it.
Does it need updating?
Or is this just something trying to trick me into downloading something nasty?

It runs as a plugin in your browser allowing certain web applications like netflix to run.
You should keep it updated.
Of limited use for me, keep it disabled on most used browser to play safe
