I can only judge on 'new' Who, but for that there were a lot of single-episode characters from Amy and Rory's time in the TARDIS and very few from the others', Martha especially - I wish Shakespeare and Joan Redfern had been on there instead of having Dorium AND Madame Kovarian, who basically appeared in the same episodes....
Because I haven't seen enough of the classic series to be able to comment fairly - I've only seen a few clips, and growing up in a generation where the special effects are a lot better, I'm not inclined to watch any of the earlier series tbh. I have, however, seen every episode since it returned in 2005, so can pass fair comment on those.
Their not a proper fan if they ve not seen the classic era. Anyone can go on youtube or dailymotion and find full stories.
Would you mind talking to me rather than about me? Thanks.
In any case I don't care whether I'm labelled a proper fan or not, it's all subjective, and I certainly don't think I should be vilified for not watching something. I have better things to do than spend hours watching a show that was made years before I was born and with special effects that are extremely dated, and it makes no difference as to whether I enjoy the current episodes or not.

A fan is someone who likes Doctor Who. It's not a requirement to have watched every single episode from day one. It's for enjoyment, not some sort of test.

Fair play if you don't like the Classic stuff but for me Special Effects aren't everything. I'd rather watch a well told story with hardly no or dodgy effects than a crap episode from the New Series with great effects.
There are plenty examples of both in Classic and New Who. For me, story is everything, effects come second.
I remember Beep the Meep. He was from Doctor Who comic, in a 1980 story, not a TV character. Was Amelia Rumford the black schoolgirl character who teamed up with the Doctor in that story?

You dont have to watch every episode but a considerable amount is good plenty of DVDs out there.

Well, I've watched them from the beginning (yes, showing off again!) but that's because of my extreme old age. I can't imagine myself having time or inclination to watch Classic stuff otherwise. I don't rewatch them, for instance.
60 responses so far in three days! i'm chuffed, hopefully we'll have a number in the triple figures by the time the poll closes. Some very surprising results so far!
Would you mind talking to me rather than about me? Thanks.

Damn right. Don't take any notice of joyless posts like that. Watch what you want. If you enjoy watching the show, you're a fan.
The special effects are not just dated. They're cheap. I love them and generally admire the work of the people who had to mend and make do with peanuts and a tight schedule. I couldn't give a fig about how modern the special effects are myself. There are loads of great scifi films and tv from those days well worth watching. Remakes with better effects don't always make better films either. But that's just me. You can suit yourself.

Oh obviously, I don't think all remakes are better at all! Just from what I've seen the special effects look dated to me, although maybe I'm not making a distinction between dated and cheap when I possibly should. Anyway, the point wasn't really about the dated special effects, it was just part of the reason why what I have seen of the classic series doesn't make me go rushing to buy the DVDs or watch more Youtube clips as opposed to watching other modern shows in my spare time. It's just personal preference for several modern shows (of all genres, not just sci fi)
Right gang, just about two weeks left to vote in the poll if you haven't already. Doesn't take long and it's just a bit of fun remember, the more people who vote, the more accurate the results!

Well, i'm only 31 myself. I was born in 1981. But I can watch and appreciate the classic series. Actually, I like it better than the modern show for the most part. I couldn't give a sugar lump about the effects; I have an imagination. By the way, Who effects weren't even considered very good at the time of broadcast, mostly. No-one who watched it cared because they could appreciate a good story without having to have their imagination spoon-fed.
Now, I'm not saying you or anyone else 'should' watch the old stuff; you're perfectly entitled to do what you like, but I think your ascribed reasoning is rubbish. Don't blame your 'generation' for your own inabilities. I don't know how old you are but if you feel you can only appreciate film and TV made in your lifetime then you are missing out on the large percentage of quality work accomplished in the medium. If your scope is truly so limited than i'm afraid it's you who's deficient, not the material.

Slightly off topic but anyone who thinks effects are everything to a good story should try watching some of the old black and white stuff, not just in Doctor Who but in other shows as well. I'm currently watching the original 60's series of The Twilight Zone alongside the remake in the 80's and I tell you now, the original Series blows the remake out of the water, despite the latter having all the effects.
I also think some of the black and white films are superb too, look at Psycho for example. The original and best out of all the sequels that followed.

How very unusual! Me too haha!
Personally, I don't think it has much to do with age: I'm 18 and I adore the classic series with a passion, whereas my 77 year old nan says she finds black and white boring, whereas my favourite tv is black and white.

I agree, it's not all to do with age, it's personal preference but as I've said before, the story is more important than any special effect. Without a good story, no amount of effects can make it that much better.
As for The Twilight zone, quite oddly, I'm watching an episode called....The Silence!

Why just new who?
I'd presume they haven't seen the 'classic' series

Nope, that was the imaginitively named 'Sharon'!

Well said! I completely agree

I'm so glad we've got the membership secretary on the forum to decide who is and isn't a fan. (this, btw, is sarcasm).

I'm glad, that's what it's for, fun yay, Ian and Barbara are my favourites haha

I second that emotion.
Nice to see Reverend Wainwright there.
Nicholas parsons was so good I couldn't not include him haha! Wish I'd remembered Amelia Rumford and Joan Redfern. Ah well, maybe next year haha :P
