Hi All,

How many transponders does freesat use? and how many channels are there per transponder?

e.g Freeview uses 6 x multiplexes with 10 to 15 channels on each.

Thanks

Freesat is just an EPG, so presumably only uses one transponder as such, which is on Eurobird 28.5E.

Freesat don't provide or transmit any programming at all, they are all nothing to do with Freesat.

You get all these FTA channels on freesat bodhani. You can see each transponder and it's corresponding amount of channels.

(Transponders in Cyan, Channels in Red)

    Eurobird

    Astra

    Hope that helps. :)

As Nigel says freesat is just a epg. If you mean which transponders are used by the channels included in the epg.
Note you get all the BBC regions but only your local ITV region and London ITV

And a final note - these are the same transponders and frequencies that are used on Sky.

    Eurobird 1 11426 H

It shares the same transponder as ITV HD and Brit Shorts (fta SD channel)

That's actually three rather good radio channels on there too (apparently used in health clubs)- GROOVE (funk, soul), HINRG LOWNRG (pop, rock), WELL CLASS (classical), all running at a high 256kb bitrate.

I can get GROOVE ok but HiNRG LowNRG and WELL CLASS seem to have two audio tracks being transmitted at the same time

It's as if HiNRG is one channel and LowNRG is another and WELL is short for Well-being and CLASS classical

Now you say that I think you are right:D. I have to admit I only listen to GROOVE! Is that a c*** up or is there some way to separate the audio:confused:?

EDIT: doh, it's one channel on the left and one on the right:rolleyes:.

I tried that in the vain hope there would be multiple audio tracks but at least on the hdr nothing seems to work. Very bizarre :D.

I've just tried it on my panny and it was just streaming one channel so I pressed the option button and it showed three audio choices they were mono 1 mono 2 and something else.

Anyhow I got back on the foxsat and pressed the speaker? button it only offered one choice then i twigged that if you press the > button it switches speaker selection .. Bingo

Edit: As jzee says but my typing is much slower :D

Well blow me down you learn something new every day :D. What fooled me was I pushed the speaker button and got the action denied icon. Realise now it was because I still had the list on screen

GROOVE is working on the same basis it's just transmitting the left hand mono and nothing coming from the right but with the humax defaulting to L/R it sounds not untoward

What do you think the reason for them doing this is? Do you think they have the L and R speakers in different rooms:D? Is there a way of finding out exactly who runs the channels- are they listed on the ofcom site?

There are a few ITV1 regions and some of the Four family as well that are Sky specific.

What for? Not trying to get at you of course but wouldn't both of those broadcasters be better off closing down one or the other and using the bandwidth to bolster the remaining?

As far as ITV is concerned the only reason they are encrypted is because there's no room on the narrow beam Astra 2D for them. They all have very small local news variations from the main provider transmitted from 2D and are likely to disappear anyway as ITV reduces the regional variations to save money. Similar problems currently stop the other PSB CH5 transmissions going fta. The BBC released space on 1 of their transponders on 2D to allow CH5 to transmit fta.

I hate health clubs (does anyone know which of the chains is supplied by this Eurobird transponder?), but 'Groove' itself is quality - lots of disco / funk along with more recent stuff in the same vein, all without any interruptions from adverts, presenters or even corporate / station IDs. Sad as it might sound, I've actually used it for a party once (before I put together a decent disco playlist on iTunes) and it saves paying for a day pass to get an ad-free evening on Spotify.

The only problem I have is that after leaving my old Thomson digibox on 'Groove' or any of the other non-EPG channels for any length of time all my EPG data disappears and I have to wait for the box to load it. Also, when I try to go to an EPG radio channel by selecting 'Radio' from the menu I get an error message telling me that no channels of this type are available; I have to go to the TV guide and page backwards which is a pain.

I only got the box recently and forced a SW upgrade (it had been in someone's attic since 2004!); it now has the latest version so I don't think that's the issue.

(BTW, long-time DS lurker here; only just got an ISP addy with which to register, so hi :))
