What a roller coaster. It's so strange and abstract and im so confused
What's the director trying to say? Can anyone explain the weird plot to me?

Makes more sense second time around.
Donnie survived the plane crash. By doing so, it created an alternate universe that would destroy the lives of many other people. Ultimately, he was given the choice to die in the initial crash, and he choose to do so, in order to spare the lives of those people being destroyed.
Bubble Boy is another good film with Jake in btw
- The Smurf discussion
- The "lifeline" scene
- Sparkle Motion bringing the house down
- "There's a big fat guy watching us right now"
- CHUT UP
Used to creep me out too when I was younger.
If Donnie Darko was set in Grimsby with Dean Gaffney as Donnie then I doubt it's raise many heads.
how about the tears for fears montage, head over heels
about as classic, as it gets, in terms of mood and music
The end montage with "Mad World" was really powerful, but I just didn't get why Donnie had to die and everything was reversed (well, okay, I do, the story would have been much different if he survived), was he no longer scared of death and dying alone? As I had his "Every living organism dies alone" quote in my head. The worst part of it was Gretchen saying at the end that she didn't know who he was.
Another tip, don't watch the sequel. 2 hours of my life I'll never get back.
I loved the Gary Jules cover of Mad World.
I think though the whole shift in the universe begins to happen at the start of the film when Donnie wakes up on the road at dawn.
It's one of my favourite films - doesn't hurt that Jake Gyllenhaal is in it Also I love the music.
I've watched it over and over again.
That would be true of pretty much any film, though.
