I have a Google Nexus 7 running Android 4.2.1. I also have the ITV player app which works fine.
However, ITV recently updated the app and I am unable to download the latest update for this. It states my device is incompatible.
Please can you advise how i can update ITV player.

edit:sideloading seems to get it up to v2 with the new itv branding.
I get a warning when opening it about a new version being available, but I can't this supposed new version on either my Samsung phone or my Nexus 7.
i use ES File Explorer;
- download ITV player to your phone
- use ES File explorer to create a backup of the apk, in a folder that's easier to access
- copy backup of apk from phone to nexus 7
Well iplayer, like most apps works fine without any tinkering. Some apps need tinkering to get to work; it looks like ITV have done an 'exclusive' deal with Samsung so the ITV app is only supposed to run on Samsung kit, so its nice to be able to work around this.
APK is the android equivalent of an .exe file on windows, more or less. Its the program file that gets downloaded when you install something.

Thank you for contacting ITV.

ITV are always looking at a variety of options for making ITV programming and associated content available to viewers via various platforms.
*
For the moment, the*Nexus 7 currently does not support the ITV Player application for Android.*We do aim to provide support for this device in the near future but at present do not have a confirmed date of when this will be.* However, keep*up to date by visiting*our website.

Yeah equivalent apps for the ipad seem to be better ATM but as Android tablets become more popular I expect that will change.
iPlayer is a perfect example of this, the iOS version is a lot better, same can be said for pretty much all the catchup tv apps.
I would like them to make an App for the Xbox, it's the only one that isn't there and the PS3 version is dire.
I've been following this discussion for a few days, and I have managed to wrangle a copy of the new ITV Player APK from Google PlayStore by installing it on my Advent Vega (which is running a custom ROM based on JellyBean 4.1.2)...
For some reason, my Vega is identified as being compatible with the new ITV Player and allowed it be installed. I backed up the APK (using Gemini) and side-loaded it my Nexus 7.
...and it works.. and so far, without problems.
Certainly, it's no worse than the original ITV Player app... and in some regards, is significantly better than the deplorable effort from the BBC with BBC Media Player.
For anybody interested, here is the APK...

How to install...
First, because you're side-loading, go to SETTINGS>SECURITY and check the tick-box 'Unknown sources, allow installation of apps from unknown sources'.
On your Nexus 7, download the APK using Chrome, keeping an eye on the progress gauge in the left-hand notification pull-down shade... upon completion, click on the 'download complete' message... ITV Player should now install.
If you have an Android filemanager installed, such as ES File Explorer or ASTRO Filemanager, you will find the APK in the /download folder.
A few points...
Unlike the original ITV Player app, you will not be requested to provide an e-mail address on first use... but you will be asked for a postcode. Presumably, this is for regionalisation purposes... ie, which ITV region you live in, such that the correct programmes for your area will appear.
Secondly, this version of the ITV Player app is 'built' on Adobe Air... so, if you have Adobe Air already installed, purely to run the original ITV Player app, you can uninstall it (assuming you don't have it installed for other apps).
Finally, and importantly... this new version of ITV Player WILL overwrite (ie., upgrade) the old version... so, if you plan on going back to the old version at some point, MAKE A BACKUP OF IT FIRST using Titanium (if you're rooted) or Gemini App Manager (if you're not) - both are available on Google PlayStore.
Right... that's it... enjoy!

The only thing I don't like is you can't close it with the back button and you have to minimize it and swipe it away, but it works fine and that's the main thing. Well done.
Glad to be of assistance, dandy...
It's true the BACKBUTTON doesn't work, and whilst pressing the HOMEBUTTON works (to minimize) the app, it doesn't terminate the app... it continues to run in the background.
To truly exit ITV Player... end the programme you're watching (X button, top left hand corner)... press the BACKBUTTON to go back to the PROGRAMME SELECTION SCREEN...
... and right at the bottom... you'll probably have to scroll down for this... in tiny letters... next to FAQs, Terms and Conditions, Contact Us...
...is the word 'EXIT'.
Press this... and you'll be offered the the option to "EXIT APPLICATION".
Rgrds,
SebJ.
Yes found the exit .
You cannot beat IOS/Apple - the best product/operating system ever.
The apps crash on Android too.
The ITV player apk isn't on dropbox any longer, could someone re-upload a copy.
Yep... here you go, latest version 2.1.1

Enjoy.

Christ I hate Apple worshippers.
The Ipad mini is not an 'upgrade' other than in your world.
It's the usual corporate bollocks. I get it all the time. They spend several minutes telling you how much your custom if worth to them and how much they want to help you, then don't help you at all.
The other one I dislike is being referred to 'our website' or 'FAQs' when the very reason you are getting in touch is because you can't find the answer where they direct you to.
They know it, we know it, they know we know it, and we know they know we know it, but at the end of the day there are now so many punters out there that one or two pissed off punters aren't that heavy.
Total techno thicko here.:o
Thank you, regarding your info I now have itv player on my Nexus 7 I bought yesterday. Even the simplest instructions will baffle me.
I logged into your post above from my Nexus on Google, clicked on your link & downloaded, opened download pressed install, got a security warning thingy, disabled the thingy, ITV player installed, re-enabled thingy I'd disabled,
All working perfect yay.:D
That's very good to hear, Essex Angel*...
Glad that it works.
You do yourself a considerable disservice, labelling yourself as a 'techno thicko'. You managed to get ITV Player running, which requires a certain level of technical acumen... particularly after following my somewhat circumlocutory instructions:).
Enjoy your Nexus 7... it's a terrific device; had mine since November - currently running a CyanogenMod custom ROM on it... and various other bit's and pieces (around 200+ apps!... including ITV Player).
I continue to be surprised why ITV Player is STILL not officially available for it... despite the fact that it works perfectly fine on it when sideloaded.
I'll upload any future updates, as and when they become available.
Rgrds,
SebJ.
Wonder why it's not then available for the Nexus 10 as this is made by Samsung?
