In this round I'm watching Jay and Andrew were the first two straight through! They don't have Shelina or Tom going through on iplayer though, which is disappointing.

It seems with every television competition nowadays there are accusations of someone being the "chosen one". The truth is Shelina was the most consistent throughout and produced the best meal on the final day, and I didn't see anything wrong with her continually cooking Mauritian food, if that's the style she wants to cook if she ever opens a restaurant. Plus with the mango obsession, its not as though she made the same dessert over and over.

She was at her best within her comfort zone - and that always seem to involve a lot of mango

A cynic might say that she studied the form on this...

John likes his spicy street food
    Greg likes mango

Keep doing that over and over and watch the praise come in.

Now clearly Shelina can cook - I just don't think she has the potential that Tom does.

And for me, the show should be about potential for future brilliance

I think at some point you have to realise your potential on the show itself and Tom didn't really manage to do this. There were a couple of flashes of brilliance, but he wasn't close enough to being the finished article. He still hadn't mastered his timings in the final week - it sometimes felt as if Tom was trying to run before he could walk. I'm sure he'll fulfil his dreams and be very successful in the future though.

I also believe there's a little bit of sneering going on at Mauritian food. I keep reading it being dubbed "street food" as if it can't be more complex or refined than that. I thought Shelina proved it could be. And I also think she proved she can cook outside her comfort zone when asked to do so.

Look at it this way. Turode is a massive fan of spicy street food.................what was Shelina's staple dishes - spicy street food.

If you bring in scoring by the chefs that the contestants work with, then you're bound to get a fairer view.

Shelina may well be the best, she may well have done the best food, but the way things stand, you have a winner who regularly produced the favourite food of one of the 2 judges and who was not scored by any of the other professional chefs involved in the series.

Unless I'm severely missing the point of the programme and the concept of what constitutes a contest in the first place, surely the person who consistently produces the best food, meeting the task criteria, and within the time given is deservedly the winner.

I fail totally to understand all the criticism of the decision as, even given the way the programme is edited, Shelina consistently delivered correctly cooked food on time and unaided. In the three programmes covering the final both Tom and Andrew failed to do the same.

What more does she need to do for goodness sake?

I believe the restaurant is in Southport, Merseyside?

If you google him "Jay Tinker" there are several articles about the restaurant he is going to open.

Shelina is a boring cook confined with the only ingredient she knows to spice up her food.

Imagine if mango is not in season...she'll probably stop cooking.

    Almost forgot her 2nd ingredient...tapioca.

But it's not all Shelina's fault she won, it's mainly down to the 2 stooges Torode & Wallace whose palates and standards have now been most definitely gone down the drain if this year's series was anything to go by.

These 2 glutons have nothing on the standard of Gary Mehigan & co on the MC Australia.

I'm genuinely struggling to understand what the problem is with the best chef who produced the best food and was liked by judges and 3* mentors alike winning is

Yes, John specialises in Australasian food in his day job - but implying that he is biased towards that sort of food regardless of what anyone else cooks means that all the winners should be variations of Australasian/pan-Asian cookery and they haven't been. By that marker, Jackie should have won last year

Masterchef The Professionals is for that :D

Civilian Masterchef is to take a home cook and refine them to a point where they could hold their own in a pro kitchen.

John appears to like all manner of food - with the proviso it is well cooked and well presented. Just because he specialises in Australasian doesn't mean he can't appreciate other styles in the same way MRjr can see the merits of other than classical French cooking.

As for Greg and his likes, I don't think he is just confined to mango. Chocolate ... cream ... chocolate ... sugar ... chocolate ... ice cream ... did I mention chocolate ...

Agreed if she'd really done her homework her sweets would have been more spectacular, though haven't we decided Gregg just agrees with John?

Shelina wasn't always the favourite, she was at risk from her lamb in episode 4, so was Tom.

Some are being very harsh here. She consistently delivered good looking food on time throughout the competition. People on here have no right to argue the final decision without tasting her food. All we can go on is how it looked and how often she delivered on time. She deserved it for me.

Tom had lots of imagination but he was inconsistent and still failed to deliver some dishes on time. He did well but for me was not consistent. Maybe he should have played it a bit safer? Mind you he is fairly good looking too, maybe some people on here took that into account............

Well done to Shelina :D As is fast getting to be tradition, we've bashed out some new innuendos to celebrate the final... Hope you like 'em! (PS I know they're for the Professionals and not last night's series but I went on holiday and am still catching up with this one, will get there!!)

Does the winner get more than the prize? Because if not, they all got the same exposure to public and they can all three benefit from that. Personally I think Tom has the best chances, Gregg and John were almost always excited about his ideas, it was the execution and lack of experience that let him down. But that's something he can improve on if he wants to.

That's absolutely true and it will be interesting to see what will happen to all 3 of them now.

Tom won't be going back to plastering - a job he didn't seem to like anyway - and like other contestants before him he'll probably be scooped up by a chef to cook in a really good restaurant before hopefully opening up his own.

It's very brave to sit behind a computer screen, throwing a tantrum when your personal choice didn't win. Shilena won fair and square. Move on.

Sorry? Who rattled your cage? This thread is for the discussion of Masterchef, it's not a Shelina love in.

If you want to start a fan thread for her, you're more than welcome to. If you don't like folks expressing an opinion you don't agree with, stay the hell away from this thread!

Personally I didn't have any favourite AT ALL, not Tom, not Andrew, & not Shelina.

IMO none of them deserve the title but there again Masterchef series seems to be going downhill since the trio of Dhruv, Dr Tim, & the food blogger guy...they were the best last 3 finalists for me...their food was so diverse & the standard as amateur chefs were excellent.

Having already read your post why do I need to read it again as I failed to understand your point in the first place and reading it again would simply confirm that to be the case....

You said she is a boring cook who only uses one ingredient to spice up her food.... and yet John said she must have used at least 20 spices in her Mutton curry, so apart from being factually incorrect I fail to understand your point.......

    Oh yes, almost forgot......

I think that was probably the high water mark for Masterchef.......the last 2 series have not been generally as high a standard as before, IMO. (Different Format!)

But I thought the final 3 at least this year were all pretty good - Shelina's food looked amazing, I would love to have tasted it and I think she become one of the better-known MC winners.

Ultimately everyone's going to have a different view on who was the best chef- its all part of the show.
