Another online resource into the mix:

    http://guides.macrumors.com/Mac_Beginner's_Guide

However, the most comprehensive way of overcoming Windows ingrainedness remains a good old fashioned book. These being the most popular:

Mac OS X Snow Leopard for Dummies
Mac OS X Snow Leopard: The Missing Manual
Switching to the Mac: The Missing Manual, Snow Leopard Edition

    Enjoy!

Genuine question: What led you to choose a mac for your new laptop?

I was given a MacBook as a crimbo present and my son gave me a thirty minute crash course. I've already installed software, apps, more memory and a "time machine" backup drive...and I'm barely computer literate! I've also kicked an old Windows laptop back into life by installing Linux and ,lo and behold, it is much like using the Mac.
Oh, I've also got windows machines as well.

Are you near an Applestore? They'll always help but you have to book an (annoyingly named) Genius Bar appointment. They also do free demos on various "how to" issues.
If you have time and £70 to spend, you can get a year's one to one hourly sessions with someone in an Applestore to work on whatever you want to work on.

I have been looking at Macs for ages , have 2 desktops and like the look of the Mac Air and managed to get one at a very good price .

I buy that magazine every month. It has some useful stuff in it. In fact I just went into town to buy the latest version and I have it sitting beside me :D

No don't encourage the OP to sign up for that nonsense! It's rubbish. I personally think you learn more from the internet or a decent book than those silly classes. I'd sooner watch Ocean Finance TV while eating glass... oh wait, Ocean TV is no more. So what can I watch instead? The Go Compare adverts on a loop? The shopping channels? Those bloody PPI and payday loan shark adverts? :p:D Not that I watch a lot of TV these days. It seems to have gone down the toilet. Half the time there's nothing to watch. I think I'll go and find the TV remote and see if there is anything to watch :D

do you have text pre-written so you can copy and paste it in every thread you get a chance to ?

you sound like you have a grudge, do you?

if someone wants to spend x amount on a little personal training on anything then what difference does it make to you?

Nope, but it's just my opinion of it and I've had that opinion since February 2011. Well I do think the whole concept of it sounds daft to me. I first read about the One to One training in Mac Format magazine. Someone wrote in about it and I decided to Google it as I had never heard of it. The more I read about it, the more daft I thought it was.

Well it would bother me if a friend or family member signed up for it as I'd probably have to listen to them go on and on and on and on about their bloody One to One sessions :p If that was the case I'd sit back, switch on the TV and look for something to watch :D Not that there's anything to watch right now...

I found iCreate magazine had more useful tutorials.

This video tutorial should get you started and is a free download from the Mac App Store.

IIRC iCreate is mostly full of tutorials. That's partly why I stopped buying it. I found Mac Format more interesting. Macworld can be good too, but it doesn't have as many tutorials. I have a couple of copies from 2010 upstairs.

so is it all one-to-one training in general? or just apple training?
i used to work in a place that offered one-to-one training for people new to windows (ie their first PC), do you strongly object to that also?

there's more to this than you're letting on.
apple hater maybe? which is strange considering you say you own many apple products.

Just the Apple Store one. It seems like a waste of money to me and I can't imagine people learn much in the back of a store. The Apple Store seems very noisy and not a good place to learn. Was the place you worked in a computer store? I don't object to that, but did they pay for a year long membership or by the hour? I guess with the Apple one it seems a bit cultish to me with the year long membership and the little silver card to prove you were a member of it :p I'm not an Apple hater though. I like most Apple products apart from the iPad and Retina Macbook Pro (although I had a dream last night where someone gave me a Retina MBP :o).
