The unpopular opinions thread
This where you post your opinions on popular music/musicians that go against what most people think.
For example:
1) I think The Beatles are/were really over-rated. Their songs all sound the same to me, the lyrics are simplistic and they had several plagiarism claims made against them.
2) Madonna is also over-rated. She has a weak voice, doesn't always write her own songs, and many of her songs from the 80's and early 90's have aged really badly. People talk about her using her sexuality and shock tactics to increase her fame, despite lacking talent, as though it's a good thing. The glorification of her behaviour set a precedent for female pop stars today, who are far too objectified and most of them lack talent. (Even the ones who are talented, like Beyonce, feel the need to objectify themselves). She's just just lowered pop music down to her level and that's nothing to praise her for. I don't think she was breaking barriers. Women have always tried to use their sexual power to get ahead. It's nothing new, I just feel Madonna's fans intellectualise her tactics when looking back on her career. Also, maybe it's because I'm quite young and numbed to sex and ubiquitous shock tactics, but when I hear of Madonna's antics against the Catholic church I just think she sounds like a ****. I view Madonna as basically the Rihanna of the 80's and 90's.
3) Talking of Rihanna, she's not pretty in the least, she just knows how to be sexy. Sort of. If you take "sexy" to mean "slutty". Additionally, her pathetic attempts to be badass aren't convincing me. She's 25 now and needs to grow the eff up and stop playing at being a thug.
4) Noel Gallagher is not a credible musician, despite how he likes to portray himself. When he performed on Alan Carr's show, he was pretending to play his guitar! He was just strumming all the strings indiscriminately, not using his left hand at all, safe in the knowledge that the viewer and the audience couldn't hear it being played anyway.
5) Adele's voice is annoying. She's a vocal one-trick-pony. Her album 21 is crap.
Add your own unpopular opinions to the list, or discuss my ones.
By the way, the opinions don't have to be negative - mine are because I'm obviously just a negative person

except the NG
Not a fan at all, but the man can play..
ok, he "re uses" a few classic riffs, but he's a decent guitarist and a better singer than his brother
1. yep vastly over rated IMHO (I'm 47, so grew up with Beatles always being played, but I just can't see how they got this mad "untouchable" status..they made some good albums, and some stinkers.. the some of their parts...all pretty shite solo, but pretty good together is the way I view them)
2. Style over Substance.. I agree her voice was weak, but improved as she got older.. Listen to early tracks like "Borderline" on multi track Isolation, and her voice is very strong, and in tune.. but the 80's mixing just buries it.
She really should just grow old gracefully & **** off
3. Total Trash (musically & personally) ('I'm with the guy in 1977 who said of the Sex Pistols.."Most of these groups would be vastly improved by sudden death"
Godspeed RiRi
4.
5. Not bad, but nowhere as good as sales dictate.. we must be in a really bad place if this shite is selling like hotcakes.
I don't dislike her, just sick to the back teeth (make that ALL teeth) of hearing her every ****ing day!!
Surely even fans must get bored of hearing her played on radio every 5 minutes??
Couldn't agree more! Beyonce is nothing more than a heavily marketed product, generic voice, abysmal material and seemingly little in the way of actual substance.
Solange on the other hand has all the natural talent you could want from a singer, her voice is more raw, more human. Her material is artistic and daring and above all else she is not the fame **** her sister is!
What's the Story Morning Glory is rubbish as are the albums after that, okay for stadium rock but not on a stereo.
Why is Michael Jackson so highly rated...never got the appeal.
those two aren't unpopular opinions, they're blatantly ignorant ones. How do the Beatles songs all sound the same, just how?:o and Adele's 2 most famous songs couldn't be more different so she's at least a 2 trick pony;)
If you're going to slay sacred cows, and they often need it, it needs to be done accurately:p
(1) There is always a danger with this sort of revisionist approach of looking with the eyes of today on what happened in the past. The Beatles cannot be overrated, they are too influential for that. The diversity in their music is evident to anyone who bothers to listen and they took artistic and creative risks which are uncommon these days. That's not to say they are beyond criticism but not on those grounds.
(2) Madonna brought the idea of the assertive, artistic female to pop and has been in control of her career. She is extremely influential for that reason alone. She's not the greatest singer but when has pop music been entirely about musicianship?
(3) That critique is very subjective and undoubtedly sexist. I personally think Rihanna is extremely attractive, sexy not slutty, slightly vulnerable and has a distinctive voice. Image is important and women are objectivised, Rihanna (and Madonna) recognise that.
(4) Noel made a whole career out of reworking some of The Beatles music. I think you could criticise him for his lack of originality but he is actually a fine guitarist and a good singer.
(5) I don't think 21 is crap but the word overrated for once does apply.
Yoko Ono's music is far superior to The Beatles, her music makes theirs sound like Mary Poppins.
(Ps - I do like Beatles as well, it's just Yoko's is on another level completely)
I couldn't agree more. I am always getting Here Comes The Sun, Revolution No9, Tomorrow Never Knows, For No One and Rain mixed up because they're so similar........
As for the plagiarism thing though, that's just outright bollocks.
Some unpopular views I have on music.
Mariah Carey is hideous. I hate her screechy, wailing voice. Her music is also complete and utter tripe.
I've never "got" the appeal of Elvis. Ever. He sounds like he was a bit thick and a bit of a thug as well, but I suppose some people like that though don't they?
Modern R'n'B and Hip Hop music is shit.
The Spice Girls were awful. I was a teenager in the 90's and wouldn't have been seen dead listening to their "music" even then.
Coldplay, Radiohead, Mumford and Sons, Take That, 1D, The Saturdays, Ed Sheeran, Rihanna, Example, Taylor Swift, Beyonce etc etc.
They all come from quite privileged backgrounds and have nothing rebellious to sing about just the occasional quirky comment about good times, getting on in life or how amazing everything is?
i'd agree, and even worse are the posh birds Florence and Lana;)
an even more unpopular opinion would be that some of the X factor kids are far more talented than a lot of other acts out there but it can never be allowed to be recognised
Well said, I couldn't agree more. I'd say the same goes for a lot of entertainment outside of music too.
Can I join you?
Isn't it funny how these kinds of threads come up Madonna nearly always gets bashed? So do her fans and i'm fed up of it!
My unpopular opinion?
People should search before they create a new thread to see if there isn't one already, there is already an UO thread somewhere else and it contains numerous Madonna and/or Madonna fan bashing posts.
how do you make that out?... if youre 47, you were born in 1966, the beatles split in 1970 when you were 4... you had grown up by then?
'always being played'? nope, after the split they all had solo careers, i heard very few beatles tracks 71 onwards, they didnt want that, their solo careers were concentrated on.
...and thats the problem with 'everyones entitled to their opinion' , it gives idiots, ignoramuses, permission to post stupid comments as the op has demonstrated regarding the beatles. they clearly havnt listend to the beatles... just how is 'she loves you' sounding like 'tomorrow never knows'? for eg.
if the beatles are overrated, god help everyone else, because whether anyone 'gets' it or not, no other group has had the impact on british music then what the beatles have had.
whats unpopular about that mariah comment? i know loads who agree!
yeah, i never got the appeal of elvis either, until those who were around in the late 50's explained that he was cutting new ground, creating and popularising new styles, did great ad hock jam sessions. im now under the impression that he was great early on, but as time went on he went bland, ending up as a pathetic individual.
modern hip hop/ r n b shit?...yep, another point that i think thats a popular opinion!
Try 'The Jungle Room Sessions' if you get a chance or have enough interest.

I see loads of comments on these forums from people saying how wonderful Mariah is, and just the other day a DJ on Radio One was practically orgasming over her and calling her a "legend". She and her screeching are also responsible for the last ten plus years of bad X Factor auditons.
