Films that inspire you to make the world better

Hey guys,

I'm writing an article for my website about how to make your and everybody else's life better. I realize that's a very bold statement, and those will obviously be only my thoughts, but in the end I was planning to include a list of films that teach us some valuable lesson or inspire us to make the world better or to become better ourselves.

Could you guys help me with that? Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

    Hello there. :)

My most inspirational film would be 'Amazing Grace' (2006): released in cinemas in 2007 to commemorate the two hundredth anniversary of the abolition of the Slave Trade by Parliament. it is about William Wilberforce (and others) who campaigned tirelessly for this cause for twenty long years before it was eventually passed as law. (But sadly, slavery itself was not abolished until 1832 - just days before the death of Wilberforce himself.)

The trailer can be viewed here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iDILyq-TLAk

This film speaks to me of courage over adversity, against all the odds, and whatever trials and frustrations you may be going through, you can overcome through faith and perseverance; and, for some, they can even change the course of history for the good of mankind, as did William Wilberforce and his fellow campaigners all that time ago.

The hymn of the title 'Amazing Grace' is also truly inspirational to lots of people throughout the world (including me). John Newton (who wrote the words) is also depicted in the film; and his story too is one to be admired - from ship slave-trader to conversion to Christianity - in which he sums up perfectly in the words of the song itself:

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.

'Twas Grace that taught my heart to fear.
    And Grace, my fears relieved.
How precious did that Grace appear
    The hour I first believed.

Through many dangers, toils and snares
    I have already come;
'Tis Grace that brought me safe thus far
and Grace will lead me home.

The Lord has promised good to me.
    His word my hope secures.
He will my shield and portion be,
    As long as life endures.

Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
    And mortal life shall cease,
I shall possess within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.

When we've been here ten thousand years
    Bright shining as the sun.
We've no less days to sing God's praise
    Than when we've first begun.

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.

Then there's hearing the tune on the bagpipes:

Ahh, the whole thing makes me cry.

@nethwen: Thanks a lot for the detailed reply, the trailer made me want to watch it, too :)

@degsyhufc: Believe it or not, I wanted to mention it, too, but was afraid to admit I've never seen it (because I guess if I haven't seen it, I really shouldn't mention it as an example :))

Amélie. The whole point made in the film.

Or the original French title "Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain"

The film that inspired me the most was 'Raiders of the Lost Ark'.

After leaving the cinema I desperately wanted to go in search of something.

Sadly I haven't thought of anything to go in search of yet.

    I live in hope.

    Thanks guys, really appreciated!
And treefr0g... I would have never come up with Indy! I guess you've been searching something to search for. Which, I suppose, is still better than nothing, there is still some searching being done.

I'm searching for ways to get rich and famous :) (or, at least, one of these) Though not too actively, I've got a girlfriend and friends and pretty much everything to be happy. But still.

There are a lot of sports related movies that are quite uplifting ..'Field of Dreams', 'We Are Marshall', 'Rudy', 'The Natural', 'The Rookie', 'Friday Night Lights'...amongst others.

MoneyBall and One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest. Both films show you in contrasting ways that life is too short.

That's the one that came to mind for me. I have seen it but can't recall why I did not like the way it ended.
