How can I stop cutlery becoming discoloured in the dishwasher?
My cutlery has rust coloured specks on it which are starting become permanent.
Other than not using the dishwasher - how can I prevent it in the first place?
I use the Finish tablets - which seem to be the main dishwasher tablet on the market - so why does my cutlery end up ruined?

I think you're bang on about it being the quality of metal. I use the cheapest cutlery from Ikea now (3 pronged forks!!) and they have never discoloured.
I'd agree with this.
I have this problem with my cheaper cutlery set and I don't even have a dishwasher!!
you should never leave your cutlery outside, especially in bushes, that stains it.:)
Ah, that could be the problem. Although it's generally other people's bushes or letterboxes;)
It also causes cats to dance on bin lids...
I'm having the same problem with a cheaper set of cutlery - the expensive set gets used more often and hasn't had any problems but the cheaper ones have started getting brown stains.
Also check your salt, rinse aid..
We have three different sets of cutlery (blue plastic handled cheapies, good quality metal handled ones and a set of wood handled ones with steak knives) and since keeping them touching metal just with their own kind I have had very little rusty discolouration.
It won't tarnish if you play eerie circus music when the dishwasher is on, and store it in a toolbox. Does it jostle about too much while in the dishwasher?:D;)
And defeated the eco saving of a dishwasher.
In my experience, cheap cutlery suffers most from rust stains.
Thanks for the replies.
pad. And if you wash as you go whilst cooking think of the time you save. I'll back elbow grease against a dishwasher any day.:)
Will try the goodhousekeeping tip!
Thanks
I heard that it helps if you ask the neighbour to get the man over the road to come round and empty the dishwasher himself.
