you would basically create a new blank image the appropriate size. open both the old images, select all, copy, and paste in to the new image.
paint.net is a great http://www.getpaint.net/
or if you would rather work online http://www.sumopaint.com/app/
or post the images and someone will do it for you.
Sumopaint is nice and free and easy, not seen that before.

As you can see, 'combine' is an option on the main menu.
I still havent managed to join 2 photos into one jpeg so when you open the pic you see 2 pics
How do you do it ??
Keep this base image open and open the first of your image files. Use the "Select All" option on the Edit menu to select the entire image then the "Copy" option to copy it to the clipboard. Then click on your base image and select "Paste" to insert a copy into the base image. You should be able to position the image where you want it.
Then repeat for the second image. You can then save the newly created image and that should be it. You can do other things like resize the two source images so they are the same size before copying and pasting them into the new image.
Paint.Net is fairly easy to get your head round so just play with it for a bit. One good thing is that all the editing you do can be undone and provided you never save a modified image over the top of the original you won't muck anything up permanently as you play.
Thanks for this, will try it

The tutorials for sumopaint are superb, well worth having a look at them.
