    For me (not in any order amongst the groups);

    Fantastic
The Lord of the Rings The Return of the King
    The Hobbit An Unexpected Journey
    The Dark Knight

    Great, entertaining films
    The Dark Knight Rises
    The Avengers
    Skyfall
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2

    Entertaining, but not amazing
Star Wars Episode I The Phantom Menace
    Transformers Dark of the Moon
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest

Watchable, but there are much better films out there
    Avatar
    Titanic

    Not seen
    Toy Story 3
    Alice in Wonderland
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

Of the last three that I haven't seen, my expectations would be that Toy Story 3 would fall into the "Great, entertaining Films," category, Pirates 4 in the "Entertaining, but not amazing" category and Alice in the "Watchable..." category. Don't know why I'd assume that, but its what feel they'd probably end up as based on what I've heard.

Only seen the first Pirates film and that was more than enough for me....:o

The Transformers film looks and sounds bloody awful, so no chance of me ever giving it a look.

Titanic was the best out of those. The others don't have as much replay value as that film, and I've seen some of them many many times! In the long run I have noticed I much prefer films where I can believe what I'm seeing. Superhero movies, while good entertainment are usually just a one time viewing for me as they lose their impact.

    The Dark Knight 9/10
    The Dark Knight Rises 8/10
    The Avengers 8/10
    Toy Story 3 8/10
    Skyfall 7/10
The Lord of the Rings The Return of the King 7/10
The Hobbit An Unexpected Journey 6/10
    Avatar 5/10
    Titanic 4/10
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest 3/10
Star Wars Episode I The Phantom Menace 2/10

Transformers 2 is probably the worst film I have ever seen, so decided against watching the third one. Same with Pirates, the second one was horrendous so I've given On Stranger Tides a miss.

Lord of the Rings The Return of the King - One of my favourite films of all time
The Avengers - Great fun although probably wouldn't watch again unless it's on TV and I've nothing better to do
Skyfall - favourite Bond film to date
The Dark Knight - Heath Ledger was excellent but otherwise I'm not all that taken with it
The Hobbit - Enjoyable but wasn't totally enamoured.
Toy Story 3 - It was OK but nowhere near as good as the first two
Harry Potter Deathly Hallows Part 2 - Actually I was quite disappointed with this for lots of reasons
POTC On Stranger Tides - Franchise improved once they got rid of Bloom and Knightley and the guff about Davy Jones.
Avatar - Terrible hackneyed story but the effects were magnificent
Star Wars Phantom Menace - I loved it when it first came out but it doesn't hold up well now
Alice in Wonderland - Real mess of a film
Titanic - Words cannot describe how much I loathe this monstrosity which I suppose speaks volumes about how I feel re the last film on my list:
POTC: Dead Man's Chest - I'm sure my eyes bled watching this.

Not seen - Dark Knight Rises (which I intend to see eventually) or Transformers Dark Side of the Moon (which I have no intention of ever seeing).

Apart from one or two gems it's a actually a pretty uninspiring list.

It's a pretty mixed bag, for sure. I think it goes to show that the size of the box office is no indicator whatsoever as to the quality of the film.

I haven't seen many of them, but those I have:

The Lord of the Rings The Return of the King - a masterpiece, my favourite of the trilogy and a fitting finale :)

Toy Story 3 - harmless fun, brought back childhood memories of watching the original!

Titanic - overrated (don't think it deserved all the Oscars it got), and I wouldn't rewatch it, but the story hits home for me as I have family connections to the shipbuilding company and remember studying the disaster at school due to the local connections too. And Kate and Leo weren't bad either!

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 - the second best of that franchise. Harry Potter was my childhood obsession so the movies were never going to live up to the books, but the last two were the best of the lot and although this one loses marks for some of the changes made, it's still a movie I enjoy rewatching.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest - the first PotC movie is the best, but this one's not bad either - decent enough entertaiment.

Is the OP's list ALL the films that have grossed over a billion? If so, I had no idea that so few had done so.

Does it take the value of a billion in today's money versus, say, when Ben Hur was first released?

I only say that because I find it quite surprising that almost all of these films were released in the 21st century, and with all the alternative ways people can watch movies these days, I'm shocked at how many still apparently go to the cinema. I would have thought that more would have gone when there was no TV, no internet and no other way of seeing a film, like in the 40's and 50's.

That's exactly why Hollywood lists $$ rather than actual attendance figures, the early-mid part of the 20thC would make today's figures look stupid.

it's very hard to get adjusted for inflation figures on older movies , most adjusted figures only do the USA grosses which can be misleading since some films make a lot more money outside the USA .

and then there's the issue of tv and video affecting the figures since the 50's .

Yeah, the trouble with the "adjusted for inflation" figures is they try to present a level playing field but actually ignore the vast changes in society, leisure and technology that have taken place over the years. Hence these lists are always unfairly skewered towards older films because they assume that the same number of people would see the films in the cinema if they were released as a new film now as they did then, when of course this would not be the case.

For example, Gone with the Wind came out at a time when if you wanted to see film, then you had to see it at the cinema or that was it. Even aside from the varied ways to watch a film within a few months of it's cinema release, there are a wider range of competing leisure options, TV, computer games.

Plus most of the films that top those lists have had numerous releases at the cinema over the years. The model for cinemas is also very different now...the focus on choice of films, the quality of the experience, is very different to the pack them in approach in the past.

In the same way, the crude use of box office numbers to measure films from today to the past are obviously skewered towards modern films because of inflation.

Essentially, i think it's really impossible to fairly measure films even from 20 years ago to today, in terms of how successful they have been, never mind when you look back to films over half a centuray ago. Really is like apples and oranges.

    The Avengers certainly the worst.

If adjusted for inflation the list would include Jaws, The Godfather, The Exorcist, Superman, Pinocchio, Rocky etc.

Adjusted for inflation the Top 10 Highest Grossing Films Of All Time would be:

    1 - Gone with the Wind - $3,301,400,000 - 1939
    2 - Avatar - $2,782,300,000 -2009
    3 - Star Wars - $2,710,800,000 - 1977
    4 - Titanic - $2,413,800,000 - 1997
    5 - The Sound of Music - $2,269,800,000 - 1965
    6 - E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial $2,216,800,000 - 1982
    7 - The Ten Commandments - $2,098,600,000 - 1956
    8 - Doctor Zhivago - $1,988,600,000 - 1965
    9 - Jaws - $1,945,100,000 - 1975
10 - Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs - $1,746,100,000

With The Lion King, The Empire Strikes Back, The Exorcist, The Philosopher Stone, Independence Day, The Two Towers, Fellowship of the Ring, Chamber of Secrets, Shrek 2, Forest Gump, Finding Nemo, At Worlds End, Return of the Jedi, Spiderman, Order of the Phoenix, Goblet of Fire, Greece, Revenge of the Sith and Spiderman 3 all passing a Billion as well.

I don't think Pinocchio would be even close to a billion though; even including it's rereleases it's gross is only $84m, I don't think even seventy years of inflation would get it even close to that high.
