Leona Lewis is the most successful, right?
Granted she's probably also the most talented person to ever appear on the show.
Then also JLS and Alexandra Burke?
Is that accurate? All the black ones? lool

Good success but future unknown/dodgy/looking more likely to fail/fading away: Shayne, Joe and Rhydian.
Very low success but managing to cling on: Same Difference.
Career just kicking off but looking bright: Diana and Olly.
Everyone else have pretty much gone. G4 had a good run but, obviously, not any more...
I think that's about them all covered in terms of any acts being successful at one point or another.
Some will disagree with the categories I put some acts in but that's how I see them all at the minute.
This was brought home to me really by Jennifer Hudsons success post American Idol.. when questioned by Oprah that she had "fallen thru his net" on idol he replied that she hadn't.. he had put her in the live sing offs to gain a place in the final 12.. but she didnt get enough votes and didnt make it. america let her down not him
The X Factor is a far more professional and high profile programme than Opportunity Knocks ever was, and the success factor seems correspondingly higher. Leona Lewis, Alexandra Burke and JLS seem to have solid enough careers. Ditto Rhydian (although not really as a pop star). Joe and Ollie may yet do so. When you think of the legends of pop music, however, names like Elvis Presley, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Elton John, Stevie Wonder and Madonna come to mind. None of the winners and runners-up listed above is in the same league success-wise and for a very good reason: they are all still far too young. The only real test of a pop star's true success is time. The vast majority of pop singers (products of talent shows or not) enjoy sadly brief careers. They work in a ruthless industry, which supplies a fickle market. It takes someone truly exceptional to develop a career that spans decades.
Will Young is still doing well. Granted he may not be a singles artist any more but his albums have all gone multi-platinum. He regularly sells out his gigs, particularly the summer shows, and is currently filming a television series in Manchester (Bedlam). It is nearly nine years since he won Pop Idol so I think he can be counted as a success.
Global super star or still working in the entertainment biz and earning a living?
There's the crux of it. There will be quite a few who consider what they are doing to be successful.
Rhydian is an exceptional talent. I love all his songs.
Journey South have been successful. Their version of The First Time Ever I Saw You're Face is a favourite of mine.
Same Difference have just got better and better, love them too.
Diana Vickers has done well. She took a lot of stick on this forum although I am not keen on her pop songs. But she was excellent in Little Voice.
Sorry but Leona's style of singing is not my taste. I am glad that she has done so well though.
I would agree with your comments on Will Young , if you add up the sales from ALLhis albums , singles and that massive Charity single a few years ago I would guess he has sold the most in total . His shows stil sellout when he tours and he's done a few films to boot . Fairly sure he co-wrote most if thxtracks on the albums .
Good post.
I have loved Stevie Wonder for decades. He was one of my first musical influences (and I was very young then). I still have my vinyls of Innervision and Songs from the Key of Life. I was in Asda the other day and Uptight, Everything is all right was playing. First released 1966! This guy's career has spanned decades. His music never dates imo. Where have all these great singer/musicians gone? Respect to the man.
Admittedly it is very difficult for truely musical people to break into the market today. X Factor attempts to platform one or two of the truely talented, the rest are novelty, spending a minute amount of time with music, only to go onto potential other careers in TV, etc.
I know there was Ben and Journey South before who were all round musicians, but Matt is the only person that springs to mind who fits this profile this year.
Lots of Wannabes and not all of them will have the staying power.
I think we forget that the forerunner to XFactor which WIll won was called Pop Idol.
He has a unique voice. I always thought it incredible that he won after being the very last auditionee to perform. Will was also really good in the film Mrs Henderson Presents.
I preferred Pop Idol. Although it was only two series, it had a better format with a really a good Big Band week and Christmas week.
The song choices were good, there was less interference from choreographers, few silly wardrobe decisions, very few if any on stage dancers, less extravagant garish stage lighting effects and a well behaved audience.
Best of all were that David and Carrie Grant worked with the contestants on their vocals and it showed.
Brenda Edwards, Miss Frank and Ruth Lorenzo are due to release material soon.
You can easily imagine her turning up on something like Later, which you never could with any of the others. She's already played some of the music festivals.
And I really didn't like her on the show.
With all of them though, they're still to prove they'll have much lasting success. Leona's second album was a bit of a flop. And the others have only released one so far....
Dianna Vickers has done a bit for herself and I would put her in the middle along with Rhydian and Jedward.
Olly and Joe await judgement. It is too early to tell.
The flops in order would read Steve Brookstein, Leon, Eoghan Quigg, Same Difference, Chico whoever else.
Overall not that many have done well for themselves really!

Will is successful because he enjoys his life, has made money, sells out his concerts and loves singing.
This is possibly the funniest thing I have ever read on this forum.
