I know it is a minor point but it annoys me that in that scene wit Dot coming home the front door of her house has no threshold. Instead we just saw the cheap lino coming to an abrupt end and it looked fake and studio-like. Those houses are meant to have stood for 100 years or more but they now all look so cheap and unrealistic these days. The set used to look much more realistic in the old days.

The sets are absolutely naff these days. They totally ruined them when they did the big refurbishment for HD. Sucked all the atmosphere out of it all.
Totally agree. The sets in the early years of the show's history always looked real and "lived in". Okay I agree that grimey or dirty doesn't have to equate to "lived in" but they should at least look realistic. Must be hard with HD but it is no excuse. The toilets in the Vic yesterday (which I believe is the first time we have seen them since they moved following the fire) just looked so fake!
It also makes me angry what they did with Pauline's old house. All the character and familiarity has been sucked out of it.

Not really, its pretty much the same, just knocked through so there is more room and light, still get plenty of dining room table action with the stairs and the kitchen is the same, its just got hardly any action going on there, people used to be in and out of that kitchen all the time
I think the major thing is the lighting, makes everything look sterile and too 'clean' - the vic toilets are awful though yes, Joey knocking the stall and the whole set wobbled :P

Yeah the sets these days are really really overdecorated and massively overdressed. All the little nick-nacks and objet d'art everywhere makes it all look too show-homey, especially when they just don't correspond to the character they're supposed to belong to.
Everything looks too neat and glossy since the changeover and it's very obvious that it's all fake. Nothing feels lived in or old - which, as you pointed out, these houses are. They're old Victorian terraces but they don't look like they've been lived in at all.
I agree with NeutronstarNeko about the lighting, too. It's really started to annoy me the past couple of years. They shoot everything with these warm, overbright lights which never look natural. Outdoor scenes are always made to look sunny, even when it's the middle of winter, and the indoor scenes are always letting way too much 'sun'light in; even in a small kitchen with a walled yard on a winter's day .
I know it sounds like trivial stuff to get annoyed over but little things like this effect the overall tone of the show. The Square used to feel so lived in and real and it gave it all an atmosphere; now it's just very obvious that it's all fake. It's starting to feel more and more like the lower-end US soaps where everything is artificial.

He'd be the worst spy in the world.
Best person to play Hide and Seek with, though.

It is very distracting.
It always sounds as if he's dragging his feet across a concrete floor - even in the scenes set in his and Tanya's bedroom.
Either the EastEnders set people need to put thicker carpets down or make Jake Wood do his inside scenes in his socks.
I'd actually pay to see that....
"Ok, Jake, indoor scene means indoor footwear. Take your shoes off, there's a good boy!"
