There seems to be an issue on the VM network, a traceroute gets so far and then times out:
>tracert www.virginmedia.com

Tracing route to www.virginmedia.com [212.250.162.12]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

<snipped>

7 14 ms 14 ms 23 ms nrth-bb-1b-ae0-0.network.virginmedia.net [62.253.185.118]
8 19 ms 14 ms 15 ms glfd-bb-1a-ae2-0.network.virginmedia.net [212.43.163.177]

I also have not been able to get on since early this morning.

Windows did the fix it thing, and said to contact your provider to fix it.

Try changing your DNS to 208.67.222.222 / 208.67.220.220

This is the reason.
Anonymous has claimed credit for knocking Virgin Media's website offline in a likely retaliation for the internet service provider's (ISP) compliance with a court order forcing it to block access to The Pirate Bay.

Virgin was the first ISP to block access after the court order was passed at the end of April, in a move that caused outcry among digital activists claiming the order represented the next stage of internet censorship.
Virgin Media confirmed that the site had been hit by an attack and was now offline as a result and that Anonymous was claiming credit for the attack.

"Our website has been the subject of denial of service attacks so we've taken the site offline for a short period of time," a spokesperson said.

Looks like the email is shot too - wonder if its linked to this

If it is, why are they only attacking VM and not any of the other ISP's?

Just who do these idiots think they are? Just because they have a gripe about some pirate site they think it's OK to inconvenience millions of users. I thought they were all about 'democracy'?
Bunch of schoolboy fascists.

The status page for my area says that VM are having intermittent problems with broadband and some problems with email. All to be fixed by Monday 14th.
We'll see

i had similar slow speeds last night. it was okay in the morning though. it looked like things were getting a bit better towards late evening, presumably as people went to bed, but the speeds were about 10th of normal
