I think I'd be considering loosing the extras that you get with the S3/S4 such as direct call, vibrate alert (or whatever it's called that vibrates phone when you pick it up if you miss a call or have a new notification) etc.
I moved from an iPhone 5 to an HTC One,and have had no regrets whatsoever. I did consider the S4,but as I buy my phone rather than contract, I wanted what I thought was the best phone, premium feel wise. The One is as well built as the iPhone, and makes the latter feel very dated. Apple really need to change tact.
I wouldn't get the S4 is you already have an S3. The S4 is only marginally better and you can't really see a huge number of differences. I would get the HTC One. It's only (major) con compared to the S4 is that it doesn't have expandable memory.
After doing LOADS of research I went with the HTC One and I'm really pleased I did.
The SGS4 is an amazing phone, but all the new features such as eye tracking and hover scroll, I know I would use for a few weeks then the novelty would wear off and after owning a SGS2 I wanted a change.
The HTC One is the best phone I've ever owned. The Ultrapixel camera IMO is outstanding, especially in low light conditions. The new front facing Boomsound speakers are the best on any phone out there (I really suggest you go and have a listen before you decide, to see how good they are). Also I've noticed that call quality and signal is the best on any phone I've had. It is also the most premium feeling phone out there IMO.
Like others have said, go and try both phones. Let us know what you go with.

Could not agree more. It is such a refreshing change from the iPhone 5,and as you say the call quality is outstanding,as I would imagine HD calls would sound like. I find that now I'm used to it,the One is just as simple and user friendly as the 5. Best decision I've made of late.
I too had the same decision to make, coming from Windows Phone 7.8. I could not decide between the two new Android handsets, I also did lots of research and i was going back and forth on a favourite.
I did though opt for the S4 and I love it, having said that there is a little part of me that wishes i went for the One. Its almost like i want both.
As I came from WP and this is my first Android phone, i am liking the phone in its entirety, someone coming from the S3 may not share the same view.
Part of my decision was that i do like Samsung as a brand and my WP was an HTC so felt like i wanted to try something different.
You couldn't really make a wrong decision, both great phones.
I went for the S4 as the reasons already mentioned above as the main boons of the One aren't important for me. The S4 build quality argument doesn't wash with me, I never use the phone speaker and I take most of my photos in daylight (and the S4 whips all comers aside from Nokia on this score).
Horses for courses as they say. You won't have any regrets though.
Think most smartphones at the top end are pretty good these days.... What some lack, others have but some do have that feature that's a just have for some that just wins it.
Removable battery is the one for me. I'm always charging the phone in the car ( in a dock) and feel that will damage the battery long term. If it does, I can just swap it out....or of course carry a spare if I have a busy day with no charger near by.
Love the look of the htc one but once there is a case on it, then what does it matter....and as the s4 is far more popular, more choice of cases are/will be available.

Both are good, get the one you like. For me it would come down to if I had to have a changeable battery and SD card slot or not. I'd go for HTC One, because I like the look of it.
Cant say in real world as I aint got one.... maybe take a look in the respective forums on AndroidCentral or on XDA Developers.
I think that the battery in the One is smaller than that in the S4 but its a smaller screen.
I may of been swayed to the one, even with the fixed battery if the screen had been as big as the S4.
I came from a Note2, the screen was a good size to use but was too big to hold or to pocket once it had a decent size case on it.
I do think that the One is a better looking phone.... BUT as I pretty much always have a case on my phones then the looks dont matter as it will be covered anyway.... plus, the s4 will have better support for accessories than the One.
At the end of the day, its your money, its you thats signing for the 24 month or however long contract, you have to make the decision thats best for you. Dont be swayed by bias on here.

I am thinking of buying the phone sim free.
Currently on orange but thinking of a change
Just like the poster above I'm another iPhone 5-to-HTC One switcher and I'm really glad I switched. It's a great phone. I personally picked it because it has the premium feel of a top-of-the-range phone, which in my view Samsung phones don't because I hate the plastic-y feel. I've also heard a few rumours that Samsung's software has an affect on the speed of the phone.
I'm sure that if I had bought the One then I would say the same....but the s4 suits my needs.... Or at least till I get itchy gadget finger again....which will be soon, lol.

The HTC does look an excellent phone though.

Plus Igot a real good deal with the S4 on Voda. They could not do the same for me with the HTC one.
Thank you ever so much for your opinions.

whats the battery like on the htc?
Outstanding! Two front facing speakers with Boomsound built in.
I'd advise you go into a store and have a listen, I predict you'll be impressed!
