It shouldn't be all about the voice...

I don't understand the common opinion that people with 'better' voices like Sam B and Nicholas are treated as if they are more talented than others because of they're vocal ability.
I'm aware that Luke, Abi and Sam C are songwriters and play instruments (not sure about the other contestants) should't we be encouraging people with this talent to be on the X Factor rather than someone who can just sing well.
Let me give you an example. Lucy Spraggan didn't have the best voice but her talented songwriting etc is what has made her quite successful.
Surely someone putting their heart and soul into a song means more than someone who just sings a song really well without any emotion *cough* Tamera *cough*

as long as your voice is good enough for the style of music you want to do then that is what matters , obviously if you want to be a big ballad singer you need a purer and stronger voice than you do If you want to do indie/rock
whether all of the acts you named have good enough voices for their other strengths to make up for it is another debate
so you are saying that someone who is aiming for a career in indie/rock music needs to be able to compete with sam B on pure vocals ?
that's an incredibly narrow view of the music world
So?? The winner get's a recording contract...If they are a great singer but boring to listen too they will flop
It's a comedy show
but there are loads of people who make great music that don't have great voices, surely the competition should recognise them too, and btw I am definitely not including sam C or abi in that category
as I said as long as the voice is good enough for the style of music you are doing then we should be judging it on the totality of the end result not just who has the best voice
Yes for more indie/quirky stuff you don't necessarily need to be technically the best.
Its an entertainment show- the ones with potential do well after the show.
Agree, its about having more than a voice. Many of the all time greats don't have brilliant voices but they have that special, hard to define quality that makes them a star.
Someone may have a beautiful voice but the charisma of a paper bag. Someone else may have an adequate vocal but charisma and stage presence in spades and it would be the latter selling out stadiums
BiB if she had done that once I might not have minded seeing her do it every week
Today it's all about the twerking, dancing with dwarves and smoking cannabis joints.
Tamera has it made: A total talent vacuum and a bad girl past. KERRRRRCHING!!!
People who can sing well and in tune need not apply! This is after all to find the next vacuous pop fodder for the kiddie charts and not really to find someone with actual talent.
yes but i think what the thread is getting at is there are other ways of being a talented recording artist. Do you think Bob Dylan's discography would have been improved had it been sung by Joe McCeldery and written by a team of writers and producers for example?
let the program be what it's name suggests (even if it rarely turns out that way), there's another program that's all about the voice...can't just think what it's called though.
it's a live singing contest about "the whole package" - having a good voice is an undeniable pre-requeset for that. a good voice - in whatever style it may happen to be...there's more to being able to sing than belting out power ballads - is a baseline foundation on which the other things such as stage presence, charisma, emotion, showmanship, personality etc build upon.
(and for the record, i doubt many indie artists would be interested in going on x factor....the moment they do they're no longer 'indie'. it's whole tagline is about finding a popstar, and it's pretty much the definition of modern day consumerism in the music industry)
To paraphrase the late, great, Bill Hicks - every popular music artist who ever did anything worthwhile was on drugs.
^^^^ This
There's a number of factors that make up a great pop star. A good voice, a good look, good charisma, being a good dancer, being interesting, being original, etc.
Someone like Sam Callahan is lacking quite a lot in the 'good voice' department. But his fantastic looks, his charm and his stage presence are good enough to make up for it.
And I'm not saying he's a terrible singer. I think he's better than most people allow.
But the point I'm making is the 'full package' does not necessarily require that you have a half decent voice. If your other qualities make up for it, you can get away with it.
Then Tamera will win easily this year.
:D:D:D:D
not on a live singing contest you can't.
(and i'm going to have to disagree with you re: sam having those other qualities to make up for his voice as well. i find him severely lacking in several of them too. although the 20 or so dancers used to fill up the stage around him are normally fairly good)
