I haven't used McAfee since the early 00's and I remember then it slowed everything down. It came free with my broadband service and I decided to give it a try, only had it on for a day now but no slow down at least and it comes with a mobile version so have it installed on my phone and also no issues there as yet.
Whats your opinion on McAfee these days?

Personally i think its a horrible little program
Microsoft Security Essentials (confusingly renamed Defender in Windows 8) plus regular scans with MalwareBytes Anti-Malware is an adequate freeware combination for most people, unless you visit dangerous web sites.
The problem with many sites these days, they look ok, but you cannot always tell. The worst cases aside from the obvious sites, are those that you go to download some freeware, and there are loads of download buttons to click mostare just annoying links to packages that you don't want or need, but some of these sites have become infected
People have opinions on 3rd party software, but I have used Norton 360 for many years and it has never let me down, with any potential virus intrusion being caught up front. People say it is expensive, but if you look around, you will often get a bargain I paid £26 for 3 PCs for 1 year.
If companies like Norton or even Mcaffee (I have little experience here) provided a poor service, they would go bust. I am less certain Microsoft has such a strong incentiv to perform well.
In the end, personal opions can matter. Most commercial and freeware packages have a trial period. Try different options until you find one that you are confident in.
Not to mention the malicious ads which can get served up on otherwise 'safe' websites.
Surely you would have to run it with and without in order to make any meaningful comparison?
Yes but I'm not making a comparison. The point is I'm running it and I don't feel lag in my system. It could be that the McAfee software is now decent or it could be that hardware specs on modern machines are now powerful enough that it doesn't matter anymore.
My comparison is to my old laptop which ran Windows 8 inbuilt anti-malware instead.
Also the thread isn't just discussing the performance hit, it's also things like how "noisy" an application is with things like notifications etc and it has been unintrusive.
I use Comodo, the free version is good, the paid version which I have got is better. I have also got a version on my phone.
Plenty of free security suits around, that does a good job. I have never liked MS own security.
Although he's clearly mad !
Again you make the assumption that people want to use Metro apps when the reality is most folk want nothing to do with Windows 8 Metro UI. The whole Eco system leaves me cold and I for one use Classic Sell, when I'm not using my Mac that is.
Again? When did I first assume people want to use metro? I have no interest in speaking for "most folk". I do believe that the kind of user who isn't computer savvy and is likely to get very worried when seeing a metropolitan police popup whilst surfing should use metro where possible for the sake of their own and others' safety.
On a related note, I disliked IE metro on my old non-touch laptop but now I have a Dell XPS 12, I love the combination of keyboard, touchscreen and multitouch trackpad for browsing and use IE metro where possible.
Again - touch - arrgh! all those greasy finger prints on a nice shiny IPS screen - never ever ever going to happen.
That's assuming people use or want to use Windows 8. Some of us are happy with Macs or Windows 7 (or a Mac running both OSes )!
+ 1 from me.
I see this thread and instantly wanted to post that!
Personally I use Nortons and get my puter specialist to do a malwarebytes scan when required
I'd say tablet users would be more likely to use the Metro apps than desktop/laptop users.
My dad saw that video. He thought it was good
