Worst year for top 10 singles from the whole of the decade imo.
Deepest Blue - Give it away https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=76gwXVOVsAM
Those lists are amazing though - the 2004 one (despite what the previous poster said!) totally brings back memories for me.
ETA: I've flicked through a few more of these lists now and realised I would still totally listen to a lot of these songs. Apart from that 9 million bicycles in Beijing thing cause that was just dire.
Actually, remove all the songs that got to #3 in 2004 as they made up most of the 25% of amazing songs that year. The chart toppers ranged from the sublime (Toxic, Lola's Theme) to the absolute shite (Sam & Mark, Peter Andre, 3 Of A Kind, Ja Rule, Brian McFadden).
Makes me shudder just thinking about them. **shivers**

Look at all those classic songs. Music really has turned to shit.
Just browsed the NOW CDs (57 - 60, the latter features hits from last third of that year) of 2004 & I wouldn't know over half of them despite the majority being top tenners... those that I do remember are r'n'b/pop fodder for 12 year olds.
My worst three #1s of 2004 were :
3 of a kind - Babycakes
Eamon - F**k it (I Don't want you back)
Eric Prydz - Call On Me
It was an abysmal year for UK #1 singles.Predominantly American r'n'b/pop, or a nonsensical dance tune with looped lyrics from some 80s song or a one hit wonder.
The only two I could stomach were ' Vertigo ' by U2 & ' Obviously ' by Mcfly... which was a good pop song with proper lyrics.
So, a song from 2000 to 2009 that doesn't get played on the radio ??
I'm with Hitstastic.. any from 2004... the year decent chart music went into oblivion for a 12 month holiday.
(But left 'Take Me Out' by Franz Ferdinand behind) ;-)
Oh I don't know... 1999 was indeed a good year for music, though 2014 has been quite upbeat so far, best year for chart-music since 2009 IMO. Plenty of good pop songs & pop-dance tunes.
Basement Jaxx, The Chemical Brothers, Madonna, Travis, Groove Armada etc- there are some decent artists in there. I forgot about Dina Caroll, she had a great voice.
Look away from the #1s and you'll find tracks that, while not loved by all, I think are up there with the best of the noughties:
Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out
Snow Patrol - Run
Razorlight - Golden Touch
The Killers - [Every Single Thing They Released]
Keane [Every Single Thing They Released, Again]
Scissor Sisters - Laura
Morrissey - First Of The Gang
The Rasmus - In The Shadows
And then there's something of a rediscovery with McFly, a group I despised as a moody long-haired 15 year old at the time as they seemed to just be another boyband appealing to pre-teen girls, but listening back to the likes of 'Obviously' and their other early tracks they're actually bloody good, better than their Busted contemporaries and most songs One Direction have ever released.
Adding to falling CD single sales and the likes of Top of the Pops, Smash Hits and CD:UK being watched by fewer and fewer audiences, chart music fell into a bit of a pit in the mid-noughties and it took until the download revolution to perk things up again.
Omg I thought I was the only one who remembered that Deepest Blue song . Loved it.
well said, completely agree, look past the crap #1s and 04 was a very good year especially for 'indie'.
ps... mcfly arent a boyband though... competant musicians who perform their own material aint the same as westlife generically!
... and that was said about modern music in 99...
its been said about modern music as long as i can remember, so over 40 years.
Not really - you had the brilliance of Arcade Fire's debut 'Funeral' but aside from that picking were slim. Modest Mouses 'Good News...',Stars 'Set Y'self on Fire' and Franz Ferdinand's self titled debut being among the better ones.
its a matter of taste.
i thought 04 was a pretty good year and far better then 06-09.
Fast forward ten years.....everything is dance rubbish or being a slapper.
I think people were calling Britney, Christina and other female pop singers "slappers" back in the 2000s to be fair.
I agree, it was the year I became much more aware of music outside of the mainstream charts. I remember my sister ringing up at five to seven on a Sunday in summer and ranting "What is this, this... bloody Babycakes?!" when they beat our beloved Libertines to the top spot
We should form a Deepest Blue fan club. Tbf I've never listened to any of their other music, but that single alone is a classic.
Babycakes makes and always has made me want to vomit. I have no idea what it is about it - the tune, the lyrics, the hideous group, the fact everybody in my form at the time used to sing it, but it has a real physical reaction within me.
but i like ukg...
imho 2002-2005 (inclusive) was a good era for music, but in saying that i think theres been some good music post 2010...
you still had some good dance, there was the indie scene which reprised the original sound and mixed abit of goth in there and imho, and it is only my opinion, it was a great era for rock, with qotsa, white stripes, hives, and loads of others creating what to me was the best rock ever (yes that might be contencious, but its my personal opinion, im not passing it off as an empirical truth!). perhaps even more surprising too from someone who grew up with original rock, i was there or thereabouts when it evolved in the late 60's-early 70's.
I thought 2011 was a good year for chart music as well and 2013 had its moments. 2012 wasn't all that good though.
Just looking at that classic chart now. There's quite a few songs I like on there:
Sometimes - Britney Spears
Bills Bills Bills - Destiny's Child
If You Had My Love - Jennifer Lopez
Boom Boom Boom Boom - Vengaboys
That Don't Impress Me Much - Shania Twain
9PM (Til I Come) - ATB
Mambo No 5 - Lou Bega
My Love Is Your Love - Whitney Houston
Bring It All Back - S Club 7 (this song was the first ever single I bought )
Spooks - "Things I've Seen" - #6 - very urban song fresh for it's time with a mysterious quality to it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M7YLWm_rbBQ
Debelah Morgan - Dance With Me - #10 Mariah-esque type singer with a tango/r and b crossiver song:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aOiDk5j9lEM
3LW - "No More" #6 - R and B girlband, with a very catchy tune
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0VmqdFjlLA
Artful Doger ft Melanie Blatt - Twentyfourseven #6 - Garage type track with an ex-All Saints member - forgettable
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ajo4JQPqJxE
Cher - Music No Good With You #8 - Typical Cher with dance influences. OK I guess
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CPTwz5B9fTQ
Samantha Mumba - Lately #6 - Her best song. Beautiful gospel ballad.

Cher and Spooks aside (although I do remember the Spooks song, I preferred 'Karma Hotel'), I think I bought all of those.
How strange - I was listening to Spooks this morning. And I really like the Artful Dodger track and the Cher one.
