Does Dimmu. Borgir count? I don't really like growly black death metal stuff, but their Abrahadabra album is awesome, recorded with a full on choir and orchestra.

This is a one off show they did https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-YC4WJcvd7Y

I guess Dimmu are nominally Black Metal, albeit at the more accessible end of the spectrum.

Using some Symphonic elements doesn't actually make a band Symphonic Metal. If that was the case, then you could probably include pretty much anyone.

    Symphonic Black Metal maybe?

ETA - That was glorious, btw :)

Shows the folly of trying to work bands and their music into rigid compartments.

I agree, you can't always be too rigid but the problem with Metal is that it encompasses such a huge range of styles & sounds, from the most brutal Death Gore or 'true' Black (that sounds like it's been recorded with a potato), up to bands where it's debateable whether they're still Metal at all, that sub genres actually become a useful shorthand for descriptive purposes.

Not to mention if you called Dimmu a black metal band to a black metal fan, they may stab you in horror. Almost as bad as calling Cradle of Filth black metal.

Yeah, the genre thing is something of a fetish in the metal world, everyone loves to be the first of a new genre, to the point sometimes it doesnt really sound that different.

I do love some of the paradoxes in metal though. Homophobia was a bit high in the 80s (although Rob Halford coming out I think helped a lot), and yet, with that in mind, they did appear to look like gay porn stars.

To me, thats gay. Not gay as in bad, but gay as in gay.

Manowar are as camp as tits :D

One thing I find amusing, is when people start trying to put bands such as Black Sabbath or Judas Priest into the sub genre boxes.

Saw Delain and WT - to cut it short, both were brilliant!

Me too. Very good show from both bands. Delain have largely passed me by 'til now, but I will have to check out their new album.

On a side note, I was in block S5, and at the end of the show as we were leaving the block, there was a guy collapsed by the door. He looked in a lot of trouble and the people with him were calling for a de-frib. A medic team were coming up the stairs, so hopefully they got to him in time. Hope the fella's OK.

Can't believe this, we were also in S5! Not only that, but one of the people I was with has just said that he saw an ambulance outside the arena as we left.

I missed most of Delain (I was at the stadium and the football went to penalties), but have to agree with you re Within Temptation - I find the songs live better than on the album, more dynamic, and rockier.

I was in S9, and didn't see the incident referred to above.

Glad you enjoyed it, and I hope that anyone else here that went did too.

Co-incidently Saturday was the third time I'd seen both bands! :D

Delain really delivered I thought. Really suited a large stage.

Within Temptation were superb and are a lot heavier live than on their albums.

The only "downer" for me was the attitude of the security staff. Delain said after their set they would be at the Merch stands after Within Temptation. Three of them were at the 1st Floor Merch stand, the remaining two on the ground floor. The security staff refused point blank to allow people to move between the two merch stands to get stuff signed. >:(

I love "Fight Me" ever since I heard it on an epic youtube video. I have never heard another song by them though.

I'm not a fan of putting bands into tight genres, but one band I've not seen mentioned on here who are really good is Bal Sagoth. I would say they fit into a black symphonic metal category.

Stream of Passion and Xandria are headlining the Dames Of Darkness Festival 2014 @ The Robin 2 in Bilston in a couple of weeks. :)

Have to say I am really enjoying the new Epica album - The Quantum Enigma. Heavier and more classical symphonic than some bands in this genre - the albums is a good listen right the way through.

I rather like them & yes, Symphonic Black Metal would probably be a fairly accurate description.

I've only listened to it a couple of times but I agree, defintite heavier than what they have done before.

The new Xandria album, Sacrificium, is recommended as well. :)

Another one here for Epica, I discovered them recently and bought a Best of from iTunes for £3.49 (not bad for 15 songs!).

I think will definitely buy the albums now.

Also love Nightwish, looking forward to them releasing a new album with Floor sometime next year.

I will nail my colours to the mast and say I'm a huge Tarja fan. Whilst the two albums with Annette had their moments they never quite did it for me.

However after watching the Showtime Storytime Blu-ray I think Floor could really be the one to elevate them to the next level. Considering how little time she had to learn the songs, her performance is remarkable.

This sounds interesting! Would you say its similar to Sisters of Mercy? Temple of Love, More etc.

Shame I didn't realise they were around with a new one - they are playing tonight in London.
