Watching it now. How come we never see Jim smoke? He's always asking Anthony to pick him some up and he always references being a smoker but we never see him smoke.
Are you sure ? I can't ever recall Jim asking Anthony to buy him cigarettes. I thought Jim & Dave were just about the only ones that didn't smoke, excect passively.

No, a few times he asks Anthony to get hi some cigarettes.
I think Mary buys him a packet for his birthday, too.

Just watched 3 episodes back to back and in all of them Jim gets a packet of cigarettes.
I liked him as Mike Bassett...Was like watching a more active Jim Royle
I might watch that later as i have not seen it and i cannot find Riff Raff anywhere to watch free and i only have the video and my player has long gone. That reminds me - must get rid of a stack of videos tapes.
I just think they should have finished after series 3 it would've achieved legendary status but they are starting to spoil it with the specials which are getting worse and worse.
Examples: Fawlty towers, blackadder, Gavin and stacey(maybe a future classic)
It's true that the episodes since QOS have not been as good but they have not made enough of them to tarnish the show's legacy.
Plus the newer specials have not been all bad apart from that one set at Denise's house. *shudder*
It's one of those comedies that will always be watchable because of the cast. It's kind of like how Grace & Favour aka Are You Being Served Again? was never as good as the original series yet the cast worked so well together that it was still worth tuning in for.

When I'm feeling down abit I'll lock myself up in my room and watch all three series back to back and then suddenly everything's okay again! I cry my eyes out EVERY SINGLE TIME when Nana dies (welling up at the thought lol)
Nana: I never drink me, just a sherry at Christmas, whiskey at new year and a bottle of stout.
Barbara: Well, I don't care what anybody is - I don't care whether they're gay, straight or Australian. It's what they're like as a person that matters.
Nana: May God forgive you Jim Royle for talking ill of the dead like that (not what she says but the way she says it!!)
Barbara: You don't have to bring shit into it, love.
Denise: I'm only not smoking in front of Baby David until he's old enough to get up and walk out of the room, then it's his choice.
Nana: She married a joiner, moved to Leeds, he knocked her about a bit, but her home was lovely
Nana: Ey, I tell you who is in hospital, Gwen's husband.
Barbara : Ooh, what's he having done?
Nana: He's having something fitted.
Jim: What - a wardrobe?
Jim: Your bloody Nana's bloody more interested in bloody Coronation bloody Street than the baby!
Barbara: Jim, how many bloodies is that?
There's a million more I just can't think of them at the moment!
Total classic's. Will have to get mine out and re-watch them now
My only complaint is they eat too much and when I'm watching ... It makes me eat :D

No idea. The only reason I'm guessing is perhaps he doesn't smoke in real life but making out his character does, don't know.
Love how Jim announces when he goes to the toilet "Well gotta nip upstairs.. got a turtle's head in my underpants"
Hehehe ''Tighter than a Camel's arse in a sandstorm'' (cant remember who he said it to?)
I remember that line as well, can't remember either who he said it to haha!
Was watching one of the Christmas ones the other day when Emma's mum and dad come round, absolutely despise Roger with a passion. Talk about big-headed much!
" you are my wife my friend and my lover
A part time dinner lady and also a mother
Chips peas and gravy, that's what you had
Chips pie and gravy, that's what I had "
"is this a poem Joe or a bloody menu? "
"jim ! "
" I'll meet you in heaven, it's peaceful up there
I'll spot you immediately with your ginger hair
So bye bye Mary now up in the sky
Farewell my Mary, You're dead now bye bye"

"I would introduce you to my wife Mary but she's dead at the moment.." found that funny

I've always wondered that too.
