Birdy deserves her own thread

Her self titled debut album is released November 5th. It features Skinny Lover, Shelter and the recently confirmed single People Help The People. About 6 songs are covers while the other 4 are original.

    I agree she deserves her own thread so thanks for starting one, little-monster! Love this girl, amazing voice and a really excellent pianist as well. My favourite song I've heard from her is actually a Birdy original - Without A Word. Stunning. Her covers are also amazing and she hasn't gone for the 'obvious' ones either. Definitely one to watch.

    I literally can't enough of her. Her music moves me so much. I don't care if she is doing covers because she is doing amazing interpretations of these songs and they all send shivers down my spine

    She is the most exciting talent I have come across in years. Perhaps since Adele and Amy, although musically she is not in their league but im judging by talent.

    Without a word is an amazing original song that reduces me to tears.

    15 years of age and she sings with such powerful emotion like a 30/40 year old who has a huge life experience would. I am sure 100 per cent her album will be amazing and i think America will love her. She has a unique voice and has that haunting vibe that Kate Bush gives in her music.

    Rant over. But i have so much love for this girl. I really do. My itunes play counts for her are insane.

    Can't find any reviews of the album from the 'proper' press yet (i've also discovered googling Birdy is not easy! Lots of 'other stuff' called Birdy!) but came across 2 reviews from bloggers. Both turn out to be pretty positive (amazingly so in one case, he sounds like he's in love, lol)

    At the tender age of 15, Birdy has one of the most naturally astounding voices around. Her self titled first full ascent into the public ear is an eclectic collection of covers, twisted and turned into a consistent string of her own tunes.....

    Birdy is clearly in the running for big things but this record, for all it’s appeal only really does one thing through out, albeit very well. Individually the songs stand out as great works but seem to blur into each other after a while. The Naked and Famous’ Young Blood is another highlight which thankfully sees Birdy raise the dynamics of the song with more beats and instrumentation.

    I came across Birdy because she covered one of my favourite tracks ever; Bon Iver’s Skinny Love. I didn’t even know she had an album planned, let alone recorded and pressed and waiting on my door mat until I got home one day and found it there. Now, often you’ll hear me saying that I’m not always the biggest fan of covers and this is an album that is simply full of them. You’ll probably be thinking that for that reason alone I won’t like this. That couldn’t be further from the truth though. This album is simply delightful. Birdy knows exactly how to put just the right amount of twist on an original to make it feel as though it was always her own. Skinny Love is only one example of this. This version is a little more punchier due to it’s slightly faster pace. Birdy’s vocal is simply stunning, there’s no denying that. The piano work is what really makes this track feel so alive though. It’s just very clean, clear and crisp and I now love this equally as much as I do the Bon Iver version.......


    ....I’m totally aware that I am simply raving about this album but well I have to be honest and I am pretty excited about it. I’m telling anyone who will listen about it and that you wouldn’t even know it was a covers album. The tracks that have been chosen all work really well together, the way they all join together works amazingly well too. If you had their original counterparts in this order it wouldn’t work half as well, but Birdy has sprinkled her magic all over tracks by the XX, The National, Fleet Foxes, Phoenix and others, and now they fit like a glove.

    Lets be honest, Birdy's debut album is no different in essence to Joe McElderry's Classic album. The only difference being that Birdy chose a load of obscure indie tracks to cover, rather than the tiresome standards McElderry opted for.

    The album is an odd experience. On the one hand, it sounds almost exactly like you might expect - a collection of perfectly performed haunting cover versions by a precociously talented teenager who probably hasn't experienced half of the heartache she's singing about. On the other, it's an overwhelmingly brilliant album which raises goosebumps with the star's fragility and talent for extracting emotional resonance from songs where we previously found none.

    LOL. Very random but kind of cute. It's great to know she's working on songs for album 2 and also great to see confirmation from herself as to why the debut album is full of covers.

    Yes, it is. It makes sense. I wonder if she will do a bit of touring at some point. Even If it's just 1 or 2 gigs.

    Hey guys, long time!
    Gonna see Birdy open for Christina Perri in a few weeks. I know maybe two songs from her, but I like them. She seems to be more of a singular talent, compared to the slew of young female singers making the rounds (If I have to see another indie, folky singer w a quirky bent, I'm gonna bang my head against the wall). I will let you know how that goes!
    Hopefully I will catch you guys on the Adele thread soon. Third era coming up. Woop.
