Generally, I know this doesn't apply to all. But a lot of the time, when female celebrities move to LA, when they're photographed they seem to have changed appearance and lost a lot of weight. Is his because in LA, everyone are all fitness bunnies and obsessed with looking glamorous the whole time? It just seems when a lot of famous women go over they, they seem to want to alter their appearance and change their figures

Unless you end up there by default because of genuine talent. you have little choice but to adapt to the shallow requirements of your new environment in order to get attention and work.

I'm trying and failing to think of anyone who's had long term success who went down that sad route.

I guess that these celebs are just following orders from whatever talent agency/studio they're signed into.

Reminds me of one example: Judy Garland before she became famous. Her studio, MGM, advised her to slim down and alter her facial looks when she was in her early teens. Her elder sister commented, meaning MGM: "They didn't care about her talent, just how the way she looked." No wonder we all know how poor Judy ended up...a total messed-up neurotic in the end.

To crack LA you must look like all the other clones

I think people exaggerate how much this happens. At least among real talents vs. wanna-bees.

Wanna-bees fall right into it. The real talents don't give a #@^.

Also saying "to crack LA you must look like all the other clones" is monstrously unfair to most of L.A. Most of it is filled with real people who aren't flakes. It's only around Hollywood, Burbank, Beverley Hills, etc. that you get the fake.

There are things that bug more than others. For example I hate that "shiny legs" thing many of the female stars do. Ugh. Clean neat shaved legs? No problem. Tan legs? If you don't overdo it and make them orange. But waxing and oiling them up? Ugh. I saw some awards show where Kate Hudson did it a few years ago, and since then I've seen it again dozens of times.

I'd say the main 'cliche' changes that you see are:-

    Weight-loss
    Teeth being 'fixed'
Curly hair being straightened (Nicole Kidman and Julia Roberts are obvious examples of that)
    Tan (real or fake)
    Botox
    Trout Pout
    Nose Job

It's quite sad seeing distinctive looking people losing their distinctiveness once they get into the Hollywood machine.

Well generally Hollywood is more shallow than a paddling pool...so the more prettier you are, the more likely you are going to hit the big time.

To be fair, men and women in the public eye both seem to change appeaarance. Even Sam Smith and Ed Sheeran have lost tons of weight recently.

It's usually weight, tits, hair and veneers for the women and all that minus the tits for the blokes.

It's not just female celebs. Look at unknowns who are attracted to the glamour of LA and how they physically change themselves.

    When in Rome...

If you want to go to LA and make lots of money, you need to adhere to their expectations, which at the very least is what you describe. If not on top of plastic surgery that makes you look like a Dr Who monster, albeit with less facial animation.

It's no different to feeling obliged to grow a beard when you decide to relocate to Hoxton and become a hipster.

I suspect because you have to if you want a successful career there. It's like any Establishment - fit in and thrive, don't and die. Teeth must be perfect, skin must be perfect and everything else must be perfect. It must be hell, but obviously a hell many are prepared to live in for the rewards.

Does Hollywood have a set look? Yep but it is a city where you can almost show up off a bus and eventually make it, the same can't be said about London, an actress I spoke to who does bits and pieces of TV work has said London can be unbearably snobby about what school you attended and where you trained, a school that no doubt cost thousands upon thousands of pounds to attend. In LA that's less of an issue so its easy to see why some actors try their luck there particularly those who aren't classically trained.

Even Clooney's wife is doing it and she is in Hollywood by proxy. Getting thinner and thinner by the day.

Kate Beckinsdale has changed her look in a major way to get success in U.S. See old before shots.

You've got it in one. Peer pressure is INSANE in LA.

I remember reading an interview with Kate Beckinsale years ago, where she joked about turning up in Hollywood and everyone assuming, because she was British, that she'd be really hairy and need a bikini wax and that she'd have terrible teeth and need extensive cosmetic dentistry work done.

I have a friend who now lives in LA (originally from London) and she has gotten very skinny, had her teeth bleached and generally seems more groomed than before. She was already a very beautiful, thin and groomed woman anyway, by anyone's standards!

It just seems to me that LA, and particularly Hollywood, places an extreme premium on looks above all else. Sadly, both men and women must feel they have to conform to succeed.

“I have actress friends who are being put out to pasture at 29. They just want to open up another can of hot 22. It’s becoming almost like kiddie porn. It’s f***ing weird.”

“People would look after you when I was a kid,” he says. “There were good people in the business. When I came to LA Rob Reiner said: ‘Come stay at my house.’ He taught me. I worked with Pacino [in 1996 crime drama City Hall]. Pacino would talk to you and mentor you. Now it’s different. The culture just eats young actors up and spits them out. It’s a hard thing to survive without finding safe harbour.”
