First off, woohoo my bet on Eastenders under 9.8m has won. Had a bet on Shrek as well but not the hundreds/thousands of pounds some had risked. Glad it did the business too
On to the ratings. Eastenders and Coronation Street seem to have come out of the epic clashes fairly well. Eastenders in particular whilst not a massive rating, ended up with a decent result. I really don't know how much of a medium or long term boost Eastenders will see though. Coronation Street did well against Call the Midwife, which I really thought would dent Corrie more than that.
Doctor Who also had a nice rating considering the early slot and it was a nice episode to watch too. If anyone has the breakdown between LIVE viewers and VOSDAL viewers for Dr Who or indeed all of the programs last night, I would be fascinated to see that.
Biggest underwhelmers for me are Call the Midwife and Downton Abbey. Call The Midwife was below the 7million mark for the majority of its runtime and only picked up an average above 7m due to the big peak at the end when ITV had news on. Downton Abbey should have capitalised on a weaker Eastenders and at least matched last years rating, however it did have the disadvantage of that news break beforehand. The news sent a big number of viewers off to BBC1 at 8:30-8:45.
Would like to see the Beeb break with tradition next year and do something different. A schedule like this would be great:

In summary I think TRF might be one of the biggest improvers when the officials come out.

Yet to see if any of BBC1's brand new sitcoms will do the business next year and qualify for a Christmas Day slot. Offerings coming up from Ben Elton and David Walliams.
Think it may be time to pension off The Royle Family. A bit "meh" last night. Just as the Trotters should have stopped whern they became Millionaires in 1996 so TRF should have stopped with The Queen Of Sheba (Nana's fial episode) which was pure quality television IMHO.

Possibly. Problem is the three previous Christmas specials (2008, 2009 and 2010) have all been really consistent in the overnights, getting 10m, 10.2m and 9.9m respectively, all with an EastEnders lead-in, so a drop all the way to 7.7m must be a bit of a blow and a shock to those involved. With Downton in play and the factors you suggested there was obviously going to be some kind of drop but that is still below expectations, especially after its lead-in performed above expectations.
Last night's episode was pretty poor and felt really tired too. I think they ought to wrap it up sooner rather than later, and I'm not sure if they'll want it on the big day next year, especially if Miranda does well tonight.
I'm going to bravely predict Doors Open to come a cropper tonight and Miranda and Mrs Brown's Boys to both crack 9m.
I am recording Doors Open tonight and opting to watch Miranda and MBB live instead. I wonder how many people will do the same? I got a Freeview+ box for Christmas, so I'm just going mad at the moment and feel like recording everything just because I can
I think you're right about Miranda and MBB cracking 9m. But I think Doors Open will do OK with 4m+. It looks quite decent and Stephen Fry is in it.

Well BBC One revived Ab Fab last year, which wasn't very good, and I doubt reviving Vicar would do much better as its glory days were when John Major was PM. I think these old sitcoms, just like a disastrous revival of To The Manor Born, though 10 million sat through what was totally unfunny and dated, are best left alone now. Auntie has Miranda and MBB as new hits and maybe is there a chance Catherine Tate can be approached again?
Made money from EE being top (granted it was odds-on last week at 1/2, backed into 1/12), sounds like others did too.
The abandoned racing on BBC2 tomorrow has been replaced by 1959 film North West Frontier, and, (of course), Coast.
I feel one of the Beeb's ricks over Christmas was Lady And The Tramp. Had they said "first time on terrestrial television" it could have got even more than it did.
Surprised at CTM's share last night, it deserved to do better in that slot. Even more surprised at the Royle Family especially as it was a weak episode.
Like others, I think they'll go for comedy next year with Miranda and the return of Mrs Browns Boys.

Well BBC One revived Ab Fab last year, which wasn't very good, and I doubt reviving Vicar would do much better as its glory days were when John Major was PM. I think these old sitcoms, just like a disastrous revival of To The Manor Born, though 10 million sat through what was totally unfunny and dated, are best left alone now. Auntie has Miranda and MBB as new hits and maybe is there a chance Catherine Tate can be approached again?
I feel that Dibley has always been more critically acclaimed than Ab Fab and has more universal appeal. Ab Fab has been getting a bit of a critical kicking for a good few years now.
Are we actually any closer in knowing what the most watched programme is on Christmas Day - Officially? Is it likely EastEnders will keep hold of the title or cold Call The Midwife or Downton take it? I know the time shift on some programmes is huge!
