Not really. Everybody in the world already knew her before anyway. It's not like she came out of nowhere.
The fact that she was already so famous beforehand from Disney and her past hits is why people are talking about her so much. If it was an unknown person doing all of that, nobody would care.
the controversy has propelled her profile to a height that was pretty unexpected really. people forget that she has never had a top 10 hit here before and is only now receiving her first billboard #1.
she's been trying to shred her disney past since 2010 with the whole "cant be tamed" campaign including her much talked about ""britain's got talent" performance. then she upped the stakes somewhat with the drastic image change last year and with her "vh1 divas" performance. then of course there was that twerking video that suggested more change was afoot.:o
i think she moved labels at the right time really to ensure fresh investment and for her to capitalise on her change in direction. the two singles have been great though, so together with the controversy, she's been delivering impressive results.
Can't Be Tamed, now that is a SONG!! I remember loving that BGT performance. Definitely my favourite song hers, although Wrecking Ball is a good track too, even if the video is awful and cringeworthy (imo!) I've never been a Miley fan in the past, and in fact used to find her an annoying precocious brat in interviews in the past. But I think she's just doing her thing now though and is experimenting with new styles and sounds. She does come across as being too overly desperate to shed her past clean cut/Hannah Montana image but really, I guess the new "sexed up" Miley is nothing more new or "shocking" to when Christina Aguilera suddenly reappeared with Dirrrty video or Britney with I'm A Slave 4 U. People were all talking about their sudden image changes too and acting shocked. I think Miley knows exactly what she's doing. She's certainly getting all the attention and getting everyone talking. She even upstaged a semi naked Lady Gaga at the VMA's, when normally it's Gaga, with her antics and wacky outfits that gets all the attention! Lol.
It hasn't really surprised me because this happens a lot when singers start becoming more controversial and outrageous. Plus the fact is she's put out two pretty great songs. I never liked her old music but I'd be lying if I said I didn't like "We Can't Stop" and I love "Wrecking Ball".
But the real test will be her album sales and how successful she is in the long term at re-branding herself. People always tire of controversy in the end, look at Lady Gaga, so the most important thing is to keep making good music.
She won't sell many albums imo (certainly when you take into account her singles sales). And that is the true litmus test of real success and, more importantly, potential longevity.
I thought that her younger base would leave her as she is making all attempts to destroy her good girl image. Now shes just another singing stripper in my eyes and a very poor role model.
Not surprised. Controversy sells . But I think that in the long run, she will regret going down this road and unfortunately may end up like Lindsey Lohan or Amanda Bynes ; It is just a matter of time.
i am confused by the supposed problem here. its not like she would be the first singer to go down this direction and her honesty is rather refreshing compared to others that are heavily influenced by the genre, yet never acknowledge the origin.
imitation is considered by some as the most sincerely form of flattery and at least she is candid about her influences. i have to laugh at people suggesting they cant take her seriously because of this or for any other reason. this is miley cyrus we are speculating here, she doesn't seem big on artistic pretensions.:D
I am very surprised that she has become that successfull because I find her image is completely tacky and tasteless & whenever I read a snippet from her (she is trying to justify whatever she has just done), I can't take her seriously either...
Last thing I read, she was giving Justin Bieber some piece of advice about keeping his top on when he goes out, like she can talk about the way to dress & how to come off well in public right now. She also said some things that made sense, but they get overshadowed by the rest!
However, I admit to liking wrecking ball (the song) -and try to ignore the hammer licking video...
her words apparently were "i want urban, i just want something that just feels black.” however, it is worth pointing out that her song writing team claimed she said that and its not a direct quote from her.
She most certainly said words to that effect. If you're going to change your artistic direction I think it has to come from a genuine place.
I can't support trivialisation of certain cultures. I actually find it insulting that "twerking" and "808 beats" is apparently representative of something that "feels black" according to Miley. It's just totally wrong.
Miley is doing more harm than good. I'm sure when she has milked this for all it is worth, she will distance herself from all of this. Not every artist in the industry has that luxury, and she is only making things worse.
I'm not surprised. It's just a shame she puts no effort into singing live anymore... Her voice was never spectacular, but she at least made an effort. I wonder if her breakdown will be better or worse than Britney's...
maybe I'm old but I don't actually see what's controversial about her. I see interviews with her saying she was 'making history' with her VMA performance and I just think... 'eh'? People may be talking about her performance now - but in 10 years time will they do so in the same way they talk about past Madonna or Britney VMA performances?
like I say, maybe I'm just old and feel like I've seen something similar before

That's exactly how I feel about stuff too, from miley to gaga it's just, to use an Elton John song title, the circle of life
I am surprised. I remember a few years ago she was doing immature songs. There was a song she did called 7 things and then there was one where it was like a country song and it only lasted 2 1/2 minutes.

the controversy is over exaggerated, as are the alarmist racial concerns. how people can take everything entirely literally and based on a supposed conversation is beyond me, but she's not first singer to become a victim of racial scaremongering.
but yes, its the media's job to whip up a storm of outraged reports which adds to the controversy, when really, many things have been done before and the circle continues.
Sadly this is the case, but it won't come without a cost. There's a famous saying that "everyone wants to be black, but nobody wants to be black".
When the cash from her "twerking" persona dries up, no doubt she will move on to the next money making scheme. What she is doing is rather sad. Her sudden change is not coming from a genuine place. She started out as a clean cut popstar, then tried to emulate GaGa with her Can't Be Tamed release, but this latest escapade is dripping with desperation.
She's rather dangerously enforcing very negative stereotypes with her behaviour. I understand that some people just won't get it, as it doesn't concern them and they have no understanding or experience of the issue, but it should not be downplayed because of that.
I feel ancient as I remember beiing intrigued when Britney Spears went down the same route but Miley makes me feel uncomfortable, like a pervy uncle. I feel like saying, "For God's sake Dear, put some clothes on!

I didn't expect her to be this successful though.

She said that?!
It's a well known saying, if you haven't heard it before you've been living under a rock all your life!

I think Charlamagne raises some very very valid points here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f49kd7ht5cU
