I agree that Cate comes closest, closer than Glenn.

Yes, basically Kate Winslet is the new Meryl Streep

Capable of playing glamourous and mundane, and good with accents.

    Kate Winslet or Jennifer Lawrence.

Those are the only two actresses who have the potential skill to match Meryl Streep. Even then it's a big ask, but that's nothing to scoff at - Meryl is just so incredible, even coming close is an achievement.

Everyone's allowed to do the odd dud movie. I'm sure plenty of people think Meryl has.

I think Marion Cotillard definitely has the potential to be up there close to Meryl, as do Kate Winslet and Jennifer Lawrence. It was Lawrence who first came to mind when I read the thread title though.

I didnt think she was bad in it at all.

I didn't say she was, I actually haven't seen it.

My point was a general one that one dud movie shouldn't ruin a person's stature, as the other poster seemed to suggest.

No one will be like Meryl, as said above

But Jessica Chastain is perhaps one of the best actresses to have come out in ages. Every role she does just screams "Oscar" and critics just absoutley love her, they love her even in the crappy films she has done. She's very versatile and despite only being 36, she has a long career ahead of her.

If Jennifer Lawrence chooses her roles wisely after her Oscar win, she could become a threat to every young actress of her generation. Right now she is, but can she continue to it. I hope so

Ah I knew I'd forgotten someone, and it was Jessica Chastain.

Thinking in terms of likeability as well, Chastain and Lawrence always seem to come across well in interviews, which is something that Meryl Streep has always done.

I'd still say the obvious person to be the 'next Meryl' if her career continues to develop like it is doing is Jennifer Lawrence - it'll be interesting to see how her next few movies (Hunger Games and X Men sequels aside) are received. But she hasn't got an Oscar and another nomination at only 22 for nothing...

As much as I may be derided for this- Olivia Coleman.

If she can get a few decent films under her belt, she's well on her way to cementing herself as a very talented and versatile character actress.

I agree, but she seems very much to be a television actress

Its a shame that the acclaim since Tyrannosaur didn't allow her to branch out more in films.

I also don't see Marion as the next Meryl

But Marion is very much this generation's Sophia Loren, minus the different nationalities of course. Marion is one of the few foreign actresses in a long time to have really made an impression in films. She's just so raw and real in most of the French language films she does. I don't really like her English speaking films.
