Random £10 put in my bank account!

Looked at my internet banking statement, and randomly £10 has been put into my account
Credit £10.00
HSBC
402417M&S HIGH WYC
15FEB 21:08 REV

I have no idea where this has come from at all, or why or anything.

PC World randomly put £100 in my account back in November and that was never resolved either and I just got to keep the money.

Do you have any shares? These seem like dividends.

    And nope, no shares.

How can it be HSBC and M&S btw?

Might be a bank machine AT M&S?

EDIT: Although I dont know how/why it could "credit" you! Sorry!

Could the REV mean a payment reversal? Maybe it was M&S who were supposed to put it into a different account number.

I had this happen to me before, random money appeared in my account. So I telephoned the bank immediately, and they were very grateful for my honesty.

Are you having your benefit day moved? Very unlikely it's that because the amount would be a random pounds and pence, but it's the only thing I can think of.

Back in November, PC World put £99.98 or something in my bank account, for no apparent reason - it was just tagged as 'REFUND' or something.

I telephoned Barclays and was on the phone to them for 20 minutes.

They said they'd investigate and if I didn't hear anything I could keep it.

    Never heard a thing...

My benefits wouldn't in any way shape or form amount to £10

Also, they wouldn't be paid in at Marks and Spencer/or at a HSBC Cash point :D

On a statement, Benefits appear credited as:
    Counter Credit £xxx
    [NI Number] DWP EESA BGC

    Just enjoy your random windfalls.

I hope you are declaring the extra income for tax/ benefit reasons.

Should I be calling up HM Revenue and Customs to declare that someone has put £10 in my bank account, so that they may tax me on it?

    :D

The numbers are the sort code for HSBC so perhaps M&S use them for their banking rather than M&S having a banking machine in there.

I didn't get bursaries and as i say i graduated in november and i'm no longer in any education .I guess it's just random payment they missed of my previous loans? I didn't even get a letter from them about it and i wasn't going to ring them and give it back ! since im unemployed and £200 was a very nice before christmas!

402417 is the sort code for HSBC bank at 1 Corn Market, High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire HP11 2AY

M&S Money are part of the HSBC group. Have you recently got any financial services through M&S?

REV is either a reversal of a transaction or a refund.

Your bank can do a full trace for you if the above doesn't ring any bells.

Thanks for digging that up :) I had no idea M&S and HSBC were linked.

Literally there is utterly nothing I have bought (neither products nor services) through either HSBC or M&S (I don't shop at M&S/use their services at all and I bank with Barclays) - let alone any reason to be given £10 by either of them.

I rang the bank over the £100 that PC World 'gave me', but nothing ever happened - so I don't even know whether it's worth ringing Barclays seeing as you end up being on hold forever

Yes that was rather bizarre I must say.

As said above, I was on the phone to Barclays and they were stumped and said they'd investigate, and if I didn't hear anything then I could keep it.

Haven't heard anything about it now since I reported it 4 months ago.

This is obviously a completely different transaction/company/mistake though as it has nothing to do with PC World.
