films that bring you comfort

Whenever I am under great stress I watch Knightriders (1981 with Ed Harris). I find the topic fascinating even after seeing it many times and the slow pace of the movie relaxing.

Does anyone also have a movie they turn to for comfort?

When I'm feeling a bit down, Big Trouble in Little China is my go to.

    It's pure, mindless joy.

Can't beat an oldie for an afternoon on the sofa. :D

    For afternoon comfort:

Don't have a favourite - any will do - but i find old 40s, 50s or 60s films very comforting, particularly British B&W films. Ealing, John Mills, twee British accents and ladies who fall in love with doctors who affectionately say, 'Run along now, you funny little thing.'

Also partial to the more 'glam' classics - High Society, Easter Parade, Casablanca, etc.

For late night comfort: Any Hitchcock. Or horror. Classic or modern psychological. Not modern gore.

For general or nostalgic comfort I resort to my childhood or teen favourites - Lost Boys, Top Gun, Dead Poets' Society, E.T., Mary Poppins, Wizard of Oz or a bit of Brat Pack 80s cheese.

Dirty Dancing is my ultimate comfort movie - just reminds me of watching it as a kid with my mum (a lot of it went over my head at the time :D). I think I know every single word by now, I've seen it that many times.

I find the ending always puts a smile on my face.

Shaddap Mr Burton, you weren't brought upon this world to get it!

American Beauty or Road to Perdition. I find them relaxing, helped by Thomas Newman's amazing scores for both.

Or if I just want a good laugh then usually something with Will Ferrell does the job like Step Brothers or Anchorman.

    ^ What Larks! Good choice.

Mind you, for a thread supposedly about comfort there's a lot here not doing my blood pressure any good.

There's no modern day movie that is more comforting then Lost in Translation for me.

People hate it. But if it were made with 2 Hollywood actors in the 60s and 70s, it would be an undisputed classic right now.

Or dismissed as smug, empty rubbish as people do now of course.

I love it too, although must say I don't find it hugely comforting as it's a bit too sad for me.
