My Little Red Book by Burt Bacharach and his Orchestra (featuring Tony Middleton)
My favourite version of this song (by Love) just happens to be the first track I ever posted to this thread.
Bacharach apparently hated Love’s Garage Rock treatment of his song, so here’s his own little known version. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pruVWiAO9GQ
Golden Lights by Twinkle
Her (at the time) controversial motor bike crash song “Terry” got to No. 4 in the UK charts, so regrettably doesn’t qualify for this thread.
This is her somewhat less successful follow-up single. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJbf1dzktqg
Heart by Rita Pavone
A minor UK hit single for the Italian singer in 1967.
I heard somewhere that this is Morrissey’s all time track favourite track. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8QXjkM7gOVY
Easier Said Than Done by the Essex
A minor UK hit single in 1963.
A track I’m particularly fond of, although as there's nothing that special about it, I cannot honestly say why. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HxAaNsOETMk&feature=related
Hey Joe by Deep Purple
Final track on their 1968 debut album “Shades of Deep Purple”.
I definitely prefer Jimi’s version, but this is certainly worth a listen (if you’ve got seven and a half minutes to spare, that is). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Xm4os2ugaA
I'm a huge traditional country fan ie 50's/60's/70's rather than modern country and that song's famous in country circles as being sung by Charley Pride.
Later of course a huge No.1 in 1981 for Soft Cell. For any young 'uns who may read the thread, she was Marc Bolan's girlfriend and was driving when he was killed in 1977.

I love those two as well.
I know what you mean about the Essex track. I think it's more of a good vibe than a stunning song. I think they did the original of 'A Walking Miracle' as well, which was a hit for Limmie & The Family Cooking in the 70s.
I'm sure you knew that The Smiths did a version of this song as the B-side to "Ask" (it's also on the "Louder Than Bombs" & "The World Won't Listen" compilations.) This is completely in tune with Morrissey's love of 60's girl groups & singers - The Smiths also covered The Cookies' "I Want A Boy For My Birthday" in their early days, and almost the last track they ever recorded was a version of Cilla Black's "Work Is A Four-Letter Word", which Johnny Marr hated so much he quit the band after the session!

I didn't know that Moz was a Rita Pavone fan - I bought a compilation album of hers after hearing the excellent "Il Ballo del Mattone" in the Argentinian movie "Nine Queens (Nueve Reinas)"

I vaguely remember seeing a TV prog of Moz in Hollywood and he was playing this old Diana Dors 45 on a Dansette!:D
New to this thread, but hell, you're all talking my kind of music!
I can't get to youtube at work, but here's a short list to get me started:
Mama Cass - Make Your Own Kind Of Music (1969) - should have been a million seller
Buffalo Springfield - For What It's Worth (1967) Never had a hit here in the UK, but a big cult following later, I guess.
This was a big hit, but you never hear it and no-one remembers it:
Herman's Hermits - My Sentimental Friend (1969 - one of my all time favourite records)
That may be the original, but I can’t say that I’m too keen on it. It seems weak compared to my favourite version by American Breed or the hit version by Amen Corner.
However, here’s a couple of tracks (one up-tempo, one slow) by the same band that I do like a great deal:-
Comments
Clockwatchers - Hey it's Summertime
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PoxFEtGrzEs
Sunforest - Mr. Bumble & Overture to the sun
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jAbjCc5ORs

Bill Oddie :eek::D - I Can't Get Through
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PlLVqrGlRg
(surprisingly good record from the old twitcher )
Long time fan of 'Daydream' since the i-Monster cover a few years back. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SaUeiCaAejA
They sampled the Gunter Kallman version http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xNJhqfby-Q
Love that Shaggy Boys record (never heard it before)...quality stuff. There's so much of that that Sunshine Pop stuff. Always liked this one...
Yellow Balloon - Stained Glass Window
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J63rkDByUNs
Manfred Mann - Why Should We Not
East of Eden - Jig-a-jig (I know it was recorded in the late 60s, but may not have been released until 1970)
I cannot understand how this classic track was never a hit in the UK.

So Little Time (1964) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uw95vueZ0iE
Quite a cool track.
Denny Laine - Say You Don't Mind http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wkYO63fffIY
(very Sgt. Pepper looking Denny)
Elmer Gentry's Velvet Opera - Flames http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2DdMgbCQVvQ

Since my previous post I’ve discovered that American Breed’s version of Bend Me Shape is not actually the original. Apparently, this is:-
Bend Me Shape Me by the Outsiders

That may be the original, but I can’t say that I’m too keen on it. It seems weak compared to my favourite version by American Breed or the hit version by Amen Corner.

Girl In Love by the Outsiders

Keith Mansfield - Morning Broadway (he composed the Grandstand theme. "Space Ho's" by Danger Doom sampled this apparently)

Peter Thomas - Vergiss Mich, Wenn Du Kannst (featuring the sultry vocals of Austrian pin-up Senta Berger)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bfPhRHsRnh8
