I've only read the first book in the Raj quartet - which was brilliant btw - but the TV adaptation is my favourite TV series of all time. Merrick was such an evil SOB and Tim Piggot-Smith played him brilliantly. I was a big Hari fan though, I cried buckets in the last episode when
they cut to the scene with Hari sitting at his desk with the framed photo of Daphne on the desk

Angel Clare - Tess of the Durbervilles
Oh don't! Yes, I saw the tv series as an impressionable 11/12 year old. and have loved Hari (and Art Malik really) since. And Merrick - oh god, what a fantastically horrible character.
