Please can anyone help me restore my sanity? My wife has treated herself to an iPad and I have the job of setting up her email account (currently on a PC). I have tried till I'm at screaming point but the iPad won't listen! I should say at this stage I've never touched an Apple computer before in my life so I'm a complete beginner. Everyone tells me they're intuitive but I'm not convinced! Anyway, this is what I've tried:
I tap Mail at the bottom of the main screen to get to the Welcome screen showing iCloud, Gmail, etc. I choose Other, then Add Mail Account. Sometimes, I'm offered the choice of POP or IMAP, other times it just goes straight to New Account. I haven't been able to work out what triggers the POP/IMAP choice; it seems to be random. When I am offered the choice, I select POP which I know to be the correct one (according to my Windows email software it's a POP3 server but I'm not sure whether that's significant). The details I then enter are:
Name: Her full name
Email: hername@ntlworld.com
Description: Her Email
Incoming Mail Server
Host Name: pop.ntlworld.com
User Name: hername (have tried it with and without @ntlworld.com)
Password : **************
Outgoing Mail Server
Host Name: smtp.ntlworld.com
User Name: hername (as above, with and without @ntlworld.com)
Password : (optional so not entered)
The routine then goes into Verifying mode and never completes. Sometimes I get an intermediate message that says "Cannot connect using SSL, do you wish to try without?" but the result is the same.
I've also tried going in via Settings/Mail,Contacts,Calendars, then Add Account. But the result is the same - an endless verifying routine.
Please please, what am I doing wrong??

These don't use POP, GMail uses IMAP and Outlook.com uses EAS. The main benefit being that they are designed for email accounts that are going to be accessed from different devices.
E.g. if she reads an email on her ipad, it will appear as read on the PC, if she sends an email from the PC, it will appear in the sent box of the ipad.
They both also have an excellent webmail access option for accessing your email from any other PC or device.
In reply to TheBigM, I should have said in my original post that I wasn't interested in using Gmail. My wife and I have very compelling reasons for sticking with our legacy ntlworld.com addresses. But thanks anyway to all 3 of you for responding to my plea for help.
