External Hard drive suddenly not showing up on my mac

I have an external 3.5" hard drive permanently plugged into my mac but today I've noticed its not showing up on my desktop, finder or disk utility.I've unplugged it etc and it powers up ok and the led light indicator lights up but I simply cannot access it.As a last resort I even plugged it into a pc but had no joy.
I have some important stuff on it too.please help

    What make is it ?
If you can hear it spinning up you would have a reasonable chance of getting at the data if you can remove it from it's case and plug it into a computer using something like this IDE/SATA to USB adapter or a caddy.
If the hard drive is WD then you may have a problem.

Edit: you can get the adapter on Amazon or Ebay etc. just make sure you get one with a power supply.

Does the external drive show in the left pane of Disk Utility?

'finder often fails to recognise my WD external HDD

Carbon copy cloner works fine for backups

I've got used to 'not needing external hdd showng in finder'

Are you using the hdd via usb to mac or is it networked?

    Thanks for the replies.
It's not showing up at all on disk utility and it's not networked either
